Alicia has a real talent for simplifying strategy in a way that is both thought provoking and incredibly impactful. We walked away from our short session with a collective understanding of the gaps and opportunities we have, which has given us a renewed energy and focus to really nail our strategy. As a speaker Alicia was engaging and relatable – her wealth of experience is obvious, but at the same time she makes it seem so achievable which I think is a pretty powerful combination

Alicia is up-front and tells it like it is. She is also very good at engaging with the audience. Alicia doesn't read off notes. She gave us learnings and tools we could take away and use. It was inspirational, funny, and vulnerable. I would recommend Alicia for events where you want to challenge your delegates' thinking, inspire them, and make them think differently.

THANK YOU for your incredible positive impact on our organisation during 2020. All of our Strategic Projects have progressed in line with our original plans. We have established a new and reinvigorated Executive Team, have regular strategic sessions to evaluate our performance and stay on track, and are finally starting to trust our managers and staff to do their jobs without feeling like we have to meddle/interfere. The change has been noticed not only by our staff and Councillors but by many of our community stakeholders, who have commented on the progressive, positive and proactive attitude that is now becoming evident across all areas of our operations. You taught me so much about my role, purpose, approach, and attitude. You opened my eyes to obstacles that were right in front of me, but they had become so much a part of the scenery that I had become almost oblivious to their impacts on our progress. You are a star.

This is no easy feat when dealing with an ultra busy executive leadership team yet Alicia managed it with easy, over a short space of time (6 weeks!) during exceptional circumstances (COVID-19, level 4). I cannot find the right words to write this testimonial, which is exactly why I am reading Alicia' Substack. Her words are like a not-so-gentle poke in the shoulder to stop scrolling and start thinking. I am a consultant with a boutique consultancy - i.e. very small. I used to think it would be the 'cats meow' to be part of one of the 'Big Four' but I didn't think I had the 'presence' to make it. I'm a subscriber to Alicia's writings. I become one because I found her LinkedIn posts compelling. Including posts she made about the Big Consulting houses and the way they operate. I've since gone on to read about how 'big' business schools groom their MBAs to 'fit' into this Big 4 world of consulting. I've come to realise with Alicia's insights that these houses operate with smoke and mirrors and that what they are offering is not for me. This revised view changed one of my career goals for good. I'm happy being a small consultancy. I haven't had to sell my soul to be successful. If I had to describe Alicia's influence in one sentence I'd say, this girl is the real deal - she's authentic, speaks from the heart (and experience) and that she's motivated me and many others to do things differently.

Read, reflect and slow the fuck down. That’s what Alicia’s writing has taught me. She is unapologetically provocative and evocative - I mean that as high praise. She challenges lazy thinking, exposes sloppy language and refuses the easy answer. Unlike, err, AI anyone? I’ve been a fan from afar for years now. What I value most is that her writing actually does something. It sharpens, stretches and leaves you more deliberate than it found you. I strive to be unapologetic in my own work every day and Alicia is one of the people who reminds me what that looks like when it’s done well. I’m glad we have thinkers like her making a difference. I CANNOT WAIT to see where her writing goes!

I first met Alicia when she was doing Strategy for Leadership workshops. Like I was to discover with her writing to come, her attitude and insights stood out; edgy, refreshing, and genuinely thought‑provoking From the workshops I ensured our work library procured her leadership strategy books. I'm a TL;SR (too lazy, slow reader) but find I dig further into her musings than anything else that hits my inbox. I often forwarding Alicia's writings to both colleagues and family alike because she has writings for all occasions. Alicia’s newsletter is one of those rare reads that stays with you long after you’ve finished it. She has an incredible ability to balance sharp wit with thoughtful challenge, making even the most uncomfortable or avoided topics feel accessible and worth engaging with. I came across your writing on LinkedIn a couple of years ago, and it has stayed with me ever since. I'm Brazilian and have lived in New Zealand for 11 years – long enough to appreciate exactly what you talk about when it comes to Kiwi culture. There's a real tendency here to tiptoe around strong opinions, which makes your writing stand out – your sincerity. You're direct, honest, and you don't apologise for it – I like that. Content creation in NZ is also genuinely hard for the same reasons – the audience is less expressive and engaged compared to Brazil or the US. You clearly get this, and I think it comes through in how you connect with people despite that. This is rare or at least not very common in NZ. And building a career as a single mum on top of that – I just want to say I see it and I think it's remarkable.

No bullshit, full vulnerability and full transparency. Most recently I was delighted when my niece shared something from Alicia and we were able to have a good conversation about what provoked us in what she had written. I first came across Alicia during covid when a leader brought her in to challenge and recharge a team that was feeling overwhelmed. She picked us up but let us get away with nothing. Alicia McKay is the human version of the game 'Tetris'. She takes these puzzle pieces, whether they are corporations, executive teams, systems, and more, and just makes sense with it. Just like the game, Alicia holds my attention by continually creating clarity where I previously faced brick walls. Dear Reader, I know it is important in any aspect of life, to see things from different perspectives. I was involved in local government in NSW Australia as a Mayor. There were a multiplicity of issues that must be grappled with, Alicia’s help at a conference in Canberra gave me the incentive to keep contact. In that recent life, and in my new life, I am always pleased at the precision of her words, more so with the angle of attack. I am addressed as a human being, not an email target, that pleases me. I plan to continue to receive her emails and have spread the word to colleagues. Lastly, as a Mayor, I held the levers of power. I discovered very quickly they were not connected to anything and it would be up to me to develop the skills to come to grips with issues. Without Alicia’s astute communications’ support in addressing those issues, I would have been quite alone. Many thanks, Neil Reilly

It has been five days since I attended my very first LinkedInLocal Auckland event , and the inspiration is still lingering. A huge highlight was the powerful speech by Alicia McKay. One takeaway that deeply resonated with me was her reminder about our intellectual sovereignty. In this era of AI-driven content and social media algorithms, it’s a timely wake-up call to be more intentional about how we receive and process information.

While I love a good powerpoint (and secretly, kind of love a bad one too), Alicia McKay opted to have no presentation when she spoke at our recent LinkedInLocal Auckland event. Instead, she freestyled her way through her current thinking on A.I. It was non-hypey. Alicia was very much: ‘this is where we are right now, this is what I think, we can go off in quite a few different directions here, it could be good, it could be bad’ - almost with a ‘shrug’. I personally think we all form our opinions too quickly, without considering other perspectives out there. So I appreciated Alicia’s self-awareness. Too many people are talking with 100% confidence with limited knowledge on technology (and/or human behaviour). Alicia’s approach actually enables an environment that fosters further thinking. And further thinking enables better conversations. Which enables better thinking… I’m sure we can all agree, we need a bit more of that, right...?

Just like the brilliant Alicia McKay, I'm doubling down on thinking. I appreciated hearing Alicia talk about our use of AI in a way that was frankly, very refreshing. I'm a bit over hearing people tell us that if we don't use AI in almost everything, we're going to be left behind. Because while I do use AI for certain things, I'm also incredibly worried about the impact it's having on our brains and on the planet. I loved that she highlighted that writing is thinking (something we've said for years about why writing a book is such a powerful personal development journey!) But my favourite part was probably this (excuse me if I got a couple of words down wrong Alicia!): "The way we describe the world shapes the world we have. Writing is not just a tool of description; it's a tool of creation." She challenged us to consider when we get words from AI, who has created the systems that are feeding those words back to us? Who are we letting infiltrate and influence our minds? And what interests do those people have? I left the event thinking even more than I usually do about our words – both those created by us and those given to us by AI. What kind of world are we shaping with those worlds? And what kind of world do we want to shape?

I attended a LinkedInLocal Auckland event this week and had the chance to hear Alicia McKay speak. One idea from her talk stuck with me: “Intellectual sovereignty.” The concern she raised was powerful: If we outsource too much thinking to AI, we risk our minds being colonised by thoughts and ideas that were never truly our own.

It takes a lot to get me to hike from one end of Auckland to the other, and Alicia McKay was it. After being a regular visitor reader of her newsletter, it was a metaphorical slap in the face (of the good kind) to hear her speak. Unfiltered, unwaveringly open and unlike any I’ve heard before. There’s a certain kind of admiration hearing someone who has seriously done her homework, read allllll the background and taken the time to form an opinion. And still be open enough to Hmmmmmm. She reinforced the need to keep intellectual sovereignty (her concept not mine). This means maintaining the inherent right and capacity of individuals, communities, or nations to independently create, govern, control, and utilize their own knowledge, data, and innovation. It’s a big concept that is worth considering more in an age where the temptation is to take humans out of the loop.

I've just completed Meetings that Matter and am excited to have a toolkit I can use immediately to make my meetings and the results of them better.

I've been in corporate all my working life and now in local government. Your insights are awesome and have bought your books too.

Local Legends by Alicia McKay has been doing the rounds with councillors after a recommendation from our Observer, and it should be required reading for anyone in local government. Honestly, it’s affirming my focus on long term, high level decision making - peak not paddock.

Alicia is one of my favourite LinkedIn provocateurs. You voice the befuddlement I feel in the workplace so eloquently and have simple and practical solutions to think differently about it. Thank you.

You keep it real, there's no BS. Every time I read one of your emails, I'm like 'Yes!!!' The topics you cover are interesting, relevant, and you get my mind cranking. Thank you!

I loved the sessions with Alicia. Alicia's workshop was fun and unpretentious. She has a craft to speak to everybody in the room, no matter where they sit in the organisation and connect with them in a meaningful way.

I learned that I need to be in the WHY, not the WHAT. I would recommend this programme for any person who is in middle leadership in the public sphere, private enterprise or the education sector.
