As a certified spiritual director I was becoming increasingly aware of the need to not only listen and offer guidance in prayer and discernment of God’s voice to those I accompanied, but also the need to offer both human and spiritual formation. With this in mind, someone suggested that I look into the coaching certification course offered by Metanoia Catholic. My initial reaction was to think that such a program was not for me - could a contemplative religious sister be a coach? As I did some research, Metanoia Catholic Coaching Certificate Course began to look more and more appealing. I loved the guiding light of Metanoia Catholic’s ethos, taken from St Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, to "take all thoughts captive,"and the truth that the spiritual warfare begins in the mind. Since becoming a certified catholic coach through Metanoia Catholic I have experienced an increase in my own personal creativity, as the skills learnt, and the overall experience of the training, have helped me to “think-outside-the-box,”of my own limiting mindset. The course has also increased my skills in helping others discern God’s will in their life and to help them discern the spiritual origin of their thoughts. What I love most about this training is just how practical the skills are. When accompanying others I would sometimes find that I was limited in how I could help them when they were stuck and unable to move forward in their spiritual life. Now, I am able to use the skills learnt through Metanoia Catholic to help others discern their thoughts, which then in turn influences their emotions, and empowers them to create new behaviours; all with and through the grace of God! So can a religious sister become a coach? Were not the Mothers and Fathers of the Desert among the first to accompany others to discern their thoughts and to help them in the spiritual warfare of the mind? It is just that now, centuries later, we have tweaked the process and named it “coaching”!
