I had never kept a research journal before this. But now I can’t imagine not having one. That said, I realized today that I annotated (quite literally) course readings a la a journal. I love books/reading, but I’ve felt it was sacrilege to write in their margins.

Reflection journaling while in the midst of my dissertation actually makes sense. I had not considered it before especially as I am reading literature and how it makes me feel particularly from the experiences I have had.

Thank you for a great sessions. I have learned so much but I see where I have so much more to learn and to write! I will keep going with the research journal. It really helps! I really appreciated you checking in as often as you did and being as available as you were. You helped make this seem doable when we all felt like we were drowning! :)

I really enjoyed working with Dr. McClish, as she provided space and an opportunity to get creative with my ideas and notes and use visuals from other sources to help get my thinking in order.

I love the idea of creating a Reflective Research Journal to make notes and reflect on my educational experiences. It’s a place to “chart how your ideas, subjectivities, thoughts, and perceptions change and evolve with time; or a place where you can brainstorm or dump ideas.” I am also regarding it as a chance to look for other types of resources from the internet and connect concepts and themes I learned to my class readings. I think I will continue the habit of keeping a research journal as I formally start my dissertation. I want to use it to help me keep writing, clarify ideas, sort my thoughts, and record some resources.

I think the weekly journaling helped me map out where I want my project to go, and helped me just put things on paper which has helped me understand my own research better as well.

Dr. McClish-Boyd served as a panelist during a workshop for our McNair scholars. The goal of the panel was to provide the students with an opportunity to hear advice about graduate school from role models who recently completed their doctorates. As a panelist, Dr. McClish-Boyd shared her story candidly with sensitivity and professionalism and served as an inspiration for the students who look to follow in her footsteps.

…before we started our journey together, I definitely felt imposter syndrome, like I wasn’t good enough like I didn’t know enough and I struggle with that but working together has helped me put things into perspective.

I truly looked forward to our sessions on Tuesdays and I felt like I always had the support (especially emotionally) that I needed to be successful. I've also learned that I know a lot more than I give myself credit for. I was so worried that I would struggle with coaching, but I actually feel like I thrived and I'm truly proud of myself.

It was inspiring to have a woman of color who has a Ph.D. facilitating the session. This conference has given me the hope that I can accomplish anything.

Dr. McClish, you were amazing and you just calmly kept opening up all these doors of thought, theory, and methodology that the room was spinning and yet at the same time you would throw the rope down for us to come back up. I especially appreciated how you put that ownership to not only be comfortable with being pushed in our perspectives and understanding but also take care of ourselves in this process. I gained so much in the mere fact that I know so little in this space and that is ok to not be an expert. I also learned that qualitative research is so much more than honoring the stories of lived experience but leaning into lived expertise of people to strengthen our own understanding and approaches to social justice. A takeaway was in one of the sessions Dr. McClish stated don't you dare let them pick apart your research because of grammar, structure, and APA, so make sure there is nothing there for them to challenge but rather let them challenge you on the content and be prepared to back it all up. Qualitative research is advocacy that comes with receipts and is ready to draw out change.

I say this with the deepest of sincerity, Dr. McClish, every week in our sessions, and even how you gave us the space to share our journals with you and get such valuable guidance from your expertise in the process I was left in awe. Especially when you demonstrated how to support others by setting strong boundaries for yourself. You showed us how to hold boundaries, and still be supportive. It is rare to get to see someone who loves what they do and does what they love with such depth as you do. You are passionate, you are well-grounded in this work, and you love opening up those doors for others to explore. This is your jam, and it shows, and I am here for it...even if I am still trying to catch up with all these rabbit holes!!

Personally, I never put much stock in meditation, probably because I have never been able to calm my brain enough to benefit from it. The session where we started with meditation was so helpful for me and I felt a significant decrease in my overall stress level and out of my head when I started writing. Since then, I have started deep breathing exercises and it really helps me relax now. This is not what I expected from the embodied narratives class, but I am happy to have learned it.

My competence in qualitative material has significantly developed since working with Dr. McClish, and I am always trying to visualize how my dissertation may look like, given these developments. Even though I am still torn about whether to do a qualitative or quantitative research design for my dissertation, I can confidently say that even if I do not choose the qualitative route, I have certainly gained more knowledge from working with her, than I ever imagined I would. My openness to research, on the whole, has certainly grown. Qualitative research is genuinely representative of human experience, and as we know the human experience is ever-evolving and parallel to which, qualitative competence is an ever-evolving process.
