Those who have lost the midnight battles, the kind where every corner, even in the dark, is but a fresh army of undone things telling you clearly you have failed where others have managed, will find a hug and a ride or die friend sitting high on your shoulder calling out chaos and daring it to take another shot. Single mom of one, farm-raised where glitter was not an option, army of pets, and quiet introvert - Sparkles (...ahem) and I could have not had less in common on the surface and so her intimate knowledge of my domestic demons has had me haul an eye brow skyward more often than not, with a weird tilt of my head towards her fast-talking Instagram image. The garbage day fix, the hire a bathroom scrubber, the realization that your dresser is just a pile of too-big boxes that make a mess (all equal-level magic with brooms, potions and nose twitching by the way), read as extraneous, amazon, first world merch hits, until, without warning, the you who wakes up with no energy to shower, and no one to notice, let alone manifest order amongst things that have unordered themselves, realizes that someone has done half the work for you - and that partnering pushes, if not inspires, you to put in effort to do your half. And that someone is Sparkles. A success story: I had pretty baskets in the linen closet, matching, river-worthy, woven vessels and wooden tool box make up holders and all manner of seaworthy hooks, ... all the things ... but chaos was winning and I would tidy over and over again, avoiding large cleaning tasks for this manageable role on repeat. The Guide taught me how you make your linen closet behave, and not mess itself up, even when a 10 year old boy, unsupervised in the upper hallway, is sent to retrieve a wash cloth per maternal decree. In fact Sparkles is such a boss that the linen closet dares not mess itself up and, even better, she will make it do everything but hand you the item you need, when you open the door. This is a book for those haunted with house stuff demons, the ones in bed who haven't yet showered today and but know how to open and close the back closet so that the things falling don't actually fall all the way ... and for everyone else too. Somehow, somewhere, she fell in a bunch of sparkles but don't let that fool you, she is a dragon-slayer from way back and she's got you.
