I first heard about PAHCOM in 1992. I joined for the opportunities to network with other medical practice managers and become a Certified Medical Manager. I took the CMM exam 1992 at the annual convention in New Orleans and passed. I met many other medical practice managers and stayed in touch with them helping me to become a better manager. I found the annual conferences’ seminars gave me more incite to better manage my staff, perform quality performance reviews, become more knowledgeable in finances of the practice, A/R analysis, and interact with my providers. One presenter, Diane Palmer, became a mentor. In 1995 I started my own healthcare consulting company, Healthcare Resource Management. I reached out to Richard Blanchette for his expert advice. His mentorship & healthcare expertise provided me the guidance I needed to get my company started. Many thanks Richard & PAHCOM.

Being a PAHCOM member has been very rewarding for me. Through PAHCOM, I’ve gained access to resources, education, and a network of peers and companies who share a commitment to excellence in patient care and practice management. The education is top notch! I’ve learned so much about new laws, IT security, and so much about the revenue stream and the tools that are on the market to improve our bottom line. What inspires me is the way PAHCOM fosters collaboration and continuous quality learning. Every webinar reinforces and drives real impact by improving operational efficiency, and contributes to healthier and more secure communities. PAHCOM reminds me that behind every policy, process, and decision is a patient, and that motivates me and fuels my passion for advancing healthcare management standards.

In this world of increasingly complex medical practices, clinic managers must be continually upgraded and educated in their knowledge of personnel, administration, CPT coding and compliance concerns and, most particularly, continual expense control. An organization like PAHCOM provides an outstanding forum for managers to meet and share knowledge and concerns of medical practices. Participation of managers in an organization like PAHCOM is an absolute MUST!

Thank you for the opportunity to become a CMM. I am so happy to have passed the exam; what a wonderful challenge! I learned so many things that I did not know and I refreshed in my mind on so many things that I did know and had forgotten or took for granted. I was surprised at how much I knew. Every day we work with all the issues addressed and think nothing of it, until we are questioned and then we try to second guess ourselves. I am so happy to belong to PAHCOM and now to be a Certified Medical Manager.

I went from managing a Dermatology and a Urology practice to starting up a practice for 2 Psychiatrists. Never having dealt with Psychiatry before, I knew I needed the help of fellow PAHCOM members. I went to the website and did a Member Search for all members with Psychiatry listed as their specialty. The network of Psychiatry managers was extremely helpful with all the questions I had in starting my practice.

Let me tell you about Navicure. I love working with them! They are the most helpful staff I have ever worked with. We work out of EClinical and the two systems work well together. All I do is gather all of my claims and upload them to Navicure. The next day I go out to the Navicure Website and look at my batch to see what went and what was rejected. They have great reports to work your denials from. Once I have corrected my claims I just rescind them. Any time I have had a problem they are very quick to respond and correct the issue. I have to say that downloading the checks is very easy too!

We recently converted our PM/EHR from Allscripts to eClinicalWorks. In doing so, we could choose a new clearinghouse. Our insurance specialist had worked with Navicure in her after hours job and was very pleased. Navicure training was some of the best I've experienced. Being overwhelmed with the new PM system, they took their time and explained the process explicitly. Luther McKaskill from Atlanta was our trainer and made himself available for follow up questions. Their dashboard is user friendly and even our 68 year old collections person was very at ease with his instruction. Their statements are simple to understand and present professionally. I have also found their cost to be less than other clearing houses. I would highly recommend them to all my colleagues.

As a member of PAHCOM for more than a decade now, I can attest to the fact that the resources that come with ones PAHCOM membership are outstanding. If I need a form, I can go to the member library and find either what I need or something close. Why reinvent the wheel when it is not necessary. But by far the best resource is the list serv. This on-line tool is a way to connect with my peers to ask questions, release pent up anger, or to even share accomplishments. The list serv is an invaluable tool for the small practice manager of today to keep up with the ever changing healthcare industry.

The HITCM-PP certification covers the knowledge and skills required to implement, deploy, and support healthcare IT systems essential to medical practice business operations today. I now have confidence to talk with authority, ask the right questions and provide suggestions backed up with real technical understanding. I know I've got the skills and employers will see that too. Certification gives me a competitive advantage over other individuals who are not certified. I have now positioned myself to maintain employment or to move up the career ladder in the area of Physician Practice Administration where HIT certification will be heavily emphasized in the future.

Joan Newell-Walker, CMM

Practice Manager for Archer Family Health Care UF College of Nursing

One of our adjunct faculty members handed me a PAHCOM application and started talking to me about this organization named PAHCOM in late 2010 and how this organization would be beneficial to me. She explained that the local Rural Health Partnership was promoting PAHCOM in the Gainesville, FL area so they were giving away 5 memberships. I told her no thanks, I am not taking on anything new. By February 2011 I gave in (she never gave up) and I joined the organization. Then as I started doing research on the organization I realized how amazing it was. I was then compelled to show my appreciation and become active and certified. So I studied and took the CMM exam in July 2011 and passed it. (my second time around) What an overwhelming feeling of accomplishment it was when I received my certification certificate with my name and credentials on it. I felt like I had finally arrived after many years of dedicated work in my field. Everyday when I enter my office, turn on the lights and see my framed certificate on the wall I still feel a warm proud feeling of accomplishment. I will always be thankful for being introduced to PAHCOM and taking the CMM exam, it has added increased knowledge, professionalism and confidence in my career.
