I became involved with the PhD people when its director approached me after he had seen books and articles that I had written about the doctorate, supervision and the examination of doctoral work. Having supervised many doctoral students and conducted over 100 doctoral viva as either external or internal, I felt that I was well-placed to run on-line seminars and mock vivas for the PhD people. I feel that the PhD people is a friendly, non-judgemental, and efficient organisation that offers a range of additional seminars and other facilities to doctoral students. Its aim is to offer extra seminars and resources to students in addition to the supervision and provision that their own University will offer them. The on-line seminars I run on topics such as preparing for the viva, making a contribution, and writing the thesis are friendly, interactive and allow students from a wide range of disciplines and regions to meet and discuss their doctoral work. These are supported by powerpoint slides and other attachments based on books I have written. I would recommend the PhD people as a valuable, additional resource that students can take advantage of as an additional opportunity to reflect on their doctoral work, to meet new people and to their enrich their doctoral ‘journey’.
