Yesterday during our Revolution Mortgage leadership session, we learned about motivational intelligence (MQ) as one of the three levels of intelligence. Most of us had probably heard something around the fixed vs growth mindset. We dove deeper into this and the performance of those in the top 1% and broke down what characteristics, mindset, beliefs and who they are as a person to achieve that level of success consistently. One of the quotes that stuck out to me was “the rate of the pack is always defined by the pace of the leader.” Did you know this is one of the single biggest differentiators towards our success and actually helps us identify and manage both negative thoughts and limiting beliefs in order to overcome obstacles and accomplish goals. It’s typically our first perception in the Driver to our growth and increase in capacity. 𝟐 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞: 1) we have unlimited potential in the ability to learn new things daily. 2) The second anchor point is around unlimited responsibility, where you own what you pay attention to and your actions. OK! I am bringing more of the family aspect in, as oppose to just letting you see myself and Jeaux (he says hello by the way)… but what I want you to see is FIERCENESS! This young lady had, until yesterday, stood in front of a crowd to give one short speech. She wanted to branch out. She wanted to get outside of her comfort zone. She wanted to develop a new skill… She asked me what I thought? I, in true dad form, gave her the "Man in the arena" speech. Look, no matter what you are facing today, if you're in the fight, then you're better than most… KEEP GOING! I was blessed enough to get some great leadership training (happy to give a plug to 2logical - The Motivational Intelligence Company here) and I have tried like hell to pass it along to my kiddos…. Be in the arena… At least you are trying! For those that don't know the amazing speech by Teddy Roosevelt, I will leave it below. Go be fierce! "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."

Funny enough, it didn’t fully hit home until late on day two, and by day three, everything came full circle for me. I’ve shared some of the class content with my colleagues and encouraged them to take it when it rolls back around. For 22 years, I was a tobacco user—snuff—and I’m sure you saw me reaching for that spit cup in class. My family had been encouraging me to quit, and I was at the point where I wanted to but didn’t think I could. On day two, the discussion around “thoughts and beliefs” really resonated with me. For 22 years, I thought I enjoyed chewing and had no intention of quitting. But by day three, when we discussed “affirmations,” everything clicked. When I left class that day, I felt invincible. I’ve been tobacco-free for two weeks now, and I’m confident I’ll stay that way going forward.

After the final session, I went on a camping trip with my family, which gave me time to reflect on what I had learned. I found myself sharing insights with my husband and applying some techniques with my kids. My son, Jack, has been told countless times now that he has "unlimited potential." The course was well-structured with just the right number of participants, and David is a wonderful coach. His delivery of the psychology behind how we think and evolve, using stories, quotes, and repetition of key points, was both engaging and memorable. Here are a few "golden nuggets" I took away: "Managers tell, leaders ask." I’ve already started using this with my direct reports and team. The ratio of time spent firefighting vs. strategizing. I’m working on getting this balance in check. "The pace of the leader dictates the rate of the pack." This has made me think inward and focus on linking my team more closely to the company vision. Tuning into people’s dominant thoughts and beliefs by listening to their pronouns and absolutes. This will be helpful in both professional and personal conversations. This course has already made a huge impact, and I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned in both my professional and personal life. The fact that babies are born with unlimited resilience and manage to master walking, despite falling over 17 times per hour. This clearly demonstrates that any limiting thoughts or beliefs we have are learned and negative. Having struggled with my own self-belief and imposter syndrome, this resonated so clearly with me. The art of bypassing the brain’s filter mechanism by using stories and quotes. This will be invaluable in helping to connect the team to the Proskauer vision and to help them to understand the tasks and how to focus on the high payoff activities. This course has already made a huge impact on me and I am excited to use the knowledge I have learned in both a professional and personal capacity.
