One of the first things I did when arriving to the U.S. for college 15 years ago was to sign up for a student checking account with Stanford Federal Credit Union. What drew me to a credit union was its fundamental difference from the “too big to fail” banks. It felt right to put my money in a member-owned, nonprofit institution where financial gains directly benefit the community it serves. But, anyone who's been watching financial services in the last decade will know that credit unions are facing an existential threat in the face of megabanks and neobanks. As part of the Curql Accelerate cohort, I got to spend a week in Raleigh, NC with Coastal Credit Union. We gained unrestricted access to the executive leadership and internal operations. Everyone openly shared their aggressive approach towards technology adoption. Their strategy has enabled them to stay competitive and defy the nationwide trend of slowing credit union growth. I learned about the grassroots movement by credit unions to diversify their tech stack and embrace fintechs / AI to bring better products and services to their members. I also learned that efficiency lies at the core of the existential challenge credit unions face. Enhanced efficiency can directly improve the member experience in various ways - from drive-up interactive teller machines to automated vendor management software. 😉 Oh, and Coverbase now also has a fully-owned subsidiary that's also a CUSO. It was only weeks after Nathan Bennett and I officially incorporated Crux Analytics that I found myself on a video call with two cheery gents by the names of Martin Walker and Jim Ryan.
