She did it!
Her Royal Highness, the Queen of Contracts Laura Frederick, has put together THE most practical and fun CLE I have ever attended! ContractsCon 2023 in Miami is in the books.
How did Laura do it? Instead of having stodgy theory recited from the stage, she invited practitioners to provide concrete advice and drafting examples with language and insight that is immediately applicable to one's daily legal practice.
Also, because it was ContractsCon, the speakers were all in character, ranging from Julia Childs and Darth Vader to Terminator and the whole Marvel Universe. The speakers were phenomenal!
(I'm not entirely sure what I did to deserve the honor of being one of the speakers. After several presentations and before it was my turn, I almost walked out -- that's how nervous I was but I couldn't let down my client (King Kong) and Laura. Presenting was fun and rewarding, however!)
I'm so grateful to Laura Frederick, Lisa ⚖️ Lang, Flo Nicolas, Esq and all the sponsors for organizing this dynamic and memorable event in beautiful Miami. Very grateful to my employer for giving me an opportunity to attend this event and improve my contract drafting and public speaking skills.

Drove to Miami for ContractsCon and got to hang out with a bunch of LinkedIn friends IRL—some for the first time ever!
Did a fun CLE on dispute resolution clauses. And got trolled by my friends for dressing up as Iron Man.
I'm back in Orlando now and getting ready to put on a two-day rock concert. It's going to be an incredible party with thousands of fans listening to some face melting music—all to support mental health.
Who needs sleep when you're fueled by friendships, passions, and coffee?!

Who says legal events have to be dull and boring? Two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending #ContractsCon, and let me tell you, it was a game-changer!
I haven't always enjoyed legal conferences where the focus is a particular area of law, and I sometimes find them dull and lacking context. So it's safe to say I'm picky when choosing legal conferences.
#ContractsCon did not disappoint! The presentations were not your typical legal jargon-filled lectures, and they were engaging and entertaining, making the subject matter come to life. Min Cho had a marvel-themed presentation that made the marvel fanatic in me geek out and totally made my day.
One of my favorite things about the conference was the sense of community, and I got to connect and reconnect with some incredible people.
This picture is one of my favorite pictures from the event. Long after the event was over, we sat as a group and talked about everything from law school memories and our work to self-care as lawyers, and I loved it.
I left inspired, and what struck me the most was the realization that when we share our knowledge and ideas in a way that is accessible and easy to understand, we have the power to bring people together and make a real impact. That's exactly what Laura Frederick accomplished with this event. She found a unique way to make contracts less intimidating for everyone, and it reminded me to own my brilliance and embrace my unique perspective as I share my thoughts and ideas.
The law does not have to be boring.

In law school, yeah like 23 years ago 🫢, I got a C in contracts. That year-long class was evaluated solely on a single 6-essay-question, three-hour long final exam that sucked every molecule of oxygen out of my little lungs (and Back Then, we did our exams using ink in these little blue booklets that still give me chills and finger cramps to think about).
The combo of the academic inferiority complex, combined with being resigned to knowing my resume would Never get picked up during round 1 of on-campus recruiting, lead me create a career powered by sheer willpower, watching industry trends, working my network, figuring out what I liked, what I was good at and what restored my energy banks. I read a lot, kept taking classes on random things, and as soon as social media became A Thing, I devoured content from other industry thought leaders as fast as it was out.
Fast forward to February 2023, and I'm a speaker at #ContractsCon and talking about the industry nuances of NDAs and confidentiality agreements, and I'm still pinching myself.
A lifetime ago, despite graduating with honors, I still thought I was a loser nobody who didn't understand "contracts" because of a single grade on my transcript. Especially since that C haunted me in interviews for years. (Q: Why do people love asking why I got a C? Obviously because I'm stupid and you're smart? 🙄)
These days, I'm talking to a room of industry experts and professionals, people who are curious, kind and regularly challenging each other to do and be better for each other, our clients and customers, and the next generations who follow us.
Thank you to Laura Frederick and her team at #HowToContract for creating a truly beautiful thing with this event and organization. We needed this space and place to discuss our craft, art, technique, language, tone. There is a what, why, who, where, and how to what we do that extends way beyond the hairy hand and consideration.
Whatever- I still need to look those up, but tbh, I think we all just did. 👀

My excitement about attending #ContractsCon this past weekend is best represented by the attached image of my daughter. Her enthusiasm for Gatekeeper 's little blue dragon stuffy I brought home from the event is appropriate to describe #ContractsCon because it was put together so well I forgot it was CLE. Filled with incredibly impressive and knowledgeable speakers, great sponsors, and a variety of fellow attendees - #ContractsCon was rigorous but SO FUN!
You may be thinking, how could a convention about contracts be fun? Answer: Laura Frederick. I've watched Laura's journey from the start and "meteoric rise" may best describe her How to Contract journey, because she hits one home run after another and manages to bring the right people together like a magician.
In 2020, while surfing LinkedIn, I came across one of Laura's daily contract tip posts (the posts that led to her How to Contract business). I found her content so helpful, and the comments section so engaging, that a natural habit formed. I began opening LinkedIn daily to read Laura's latest post and cartoon, then peruse the comments full of insightful discussions between people located all over the world.
When Laura published her first book, How to Contract, I bought the Kindle version for my iPad. Then I joined her membership-based group. I learned more from Laura than I could've imagined and yet remain stunned, though not entirely surprised, that law schools remain bereft of this useful content. (I continue to believe Laura's How to Contract should be taught in every law school.) Little did I know that, armed with invaluable knowledge, within a couple years I'd fast track my way to a role where I am managing and training a brand new corporate counsel with no prior contracting experience. Naturally, my first bit of actionable advice for them was to buy Laura's second How to Contract book and read it a few times.
#ContractsCon was even more awesome than I expected, which is saying a lot since I already thought it would be amazing.
Even though lawyers tend to be the target audience, there were some business professionals in attendance and wow that choice is very wise! A business leader could benefit enormously by learning more about the legal and contracting side of the business. Although lawyers and contract managers need to learn about the business, it often isn't the other way around and yet doing so is a great strategic advantage for many reasons.
No matter how much experience one has with contracts, there's something useful at #ContractsCon - whether to learn about contracting and negotiating basics, validate that how you already do things is in line with best practices, experience a structured refresher on contracts, learn some new skills, or to network and make friends with similar interests.
Thank you to Laura and everyone involved for making a truly worthwhile event!

ContractsCon Day 2! Highlights for me were: (1) Meeting Sterling Miller in person! If you don't already follow Sterling's blog, you should. It's lnkd.in/ehyxCCQu. (2) Sommer Coutu's and Annmarie Giblin's presentation on managing cybersecurity risk with liability, insurance, and indemnification provisions. I took a ton of notes. (3) the small group exercise for Hebe Doneski's and Laura Frederick's presentation on how to de-risk contract formation (orders, order of precedence, and online terms). (4) Foster Sayers walking into the Starbucks located in the University with his guitar, the barista asking if he was a music professor, and him answering no, he was here for a conference and sometimes he sings about contracts.(5) New Contract Nerds swag, stickers and bookmarks! (6) The networking exercise where we had to connect with ten new people on LinkedIn, another attendee and I seeing we were already connected and tracing it back to one of Shai Mehani's In-House Connect events.
I'm scheduled to fly home tomorrow, but the way the weather in New York is looking like that flight may get cancelled. I can't say that would make me sad since it means I can go to day 3. If not, I'll see you next year! Thank you Lisa ⚖️ Lang for getting photos of yesterday's Contracts Karaoke!

It’s been another AMAZING #ContractsCon from How to Contract. Congratulations, Laura Frederick! You set a new bar for having fun while learning about contracts. The costumes you and other speakers wore added so much to the event.
I realized too late that I did not get enough pictures with friends at the event but was very glad for the ones I did manage to grab with Nada Alnajafi, Shai Mehani, Lucy Bassli, and Lara Trope. (BTW, when you all experience pajama day at a future conference, please know it was born of an afternoon chat I had with Lara and Lucy 😆😉).

I did finally get a picture with the OG Legal Influencer and the one that first inspired me to put out my own content, Sterling Miller. If you can believe it… he’s also the caveman presenting behind all that hair. 😂
I also finally got a picture with the brilliant and hilarious, Krysta Johnson, a kindred spirit who was so nice in giving me some extra swag for contract managers on my team. The Lexion bags never disappoint. While we didn’t get a photo, I finally met Jessica Nguyen in person—so nice to spend time with her!
John Lindsey, I wish we’d gotten a picture… your jacket was excellent! Next year… in the meantime, we’ll have to plan a fun collaboration 🤩😉!
If I keep tagging people, this post will never end. So, I will close and say to my old friends that it was great to see you and to my new friends it was awesome to meet you!

Kicking off the new year with #ContractsCon2024 hosted by How to Contract!
It's one of the best ways to jam all sorts of great contract knowledge right into your brain.
While I'm looking forward to all of the sessions, there are a few in particular that I don't want to miss:
✔ How to Manage Cybersecurity Risk with Liability, Insurance, and Indemnification Provisions, with Sommer Coutu and Annmarie Giblin. Cybersecurity is top of mind for both customers and vendors, so I'm looking forward to learning about current best practices for mitigating these risks.
✔ How to Review and Negotiate the Other Party's DPA, with Jessica Nguyen and Krysta Johnson. Data privacy requirements are always changing, so I'm looking forward to learning how counterparties expect you to comply...and how to push back when they're being unreasonable. Also jokes. I'm expecting lots of jokes. 😂
✔ How to Build Trust in Negotiations by Keld Jensen. This is one of two sessions that I'm looking forward to that isn't about a substantive legal concept, but should be just as helpful. I've lately become interested in how parties can establish trust in negotiations, so this sounds perfect.
✔ How to Negotiate Without Power, by Kwame Christian, Esq., M.A. This is the other session that isn't about a substantive legal concept, but rather the process of negotiating. We all find ourselves negotiating without leverage (sometimes more than we'd like), so I'm hoping to pick up some actionable advice from one of the best.
❄ I'll be attending ContractsCon virtually from Pittsburgh, where it's going to be about 8 degrees outside.
🏒 Unfortunately, since I won't be in Vegas in person, I'm going to miss the perfect chance to knock off one of my bucket list items: catching a hockey game in Vegas. My hometown Penguins 🐧 play the Golden Knights on Saturday and it would have been great to spend a few days in Vegas talking contracts and then cap off the trip with a hockey game.

WHEN YOU HEAR SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING
Last night, I went to a dinner hosted by Jessica Nguyen and Krysta Johnson of Lexion after the conclusion of an amazing first conference day for #ContractsCon 2024.
Dinner was such a great opportunity to get to know speakers and participants.
I engaged in so many great conversations. One conversation I had was with Min Cho and Amanda Haverstick.
We talked about a great post by Min.

In his post, Min talked about when “you’re on an email chain with lots of people, and the last sender sent you an email with a mistake, don’t ‘reply all’ pointing out the error. “
Instead, Min suggested letting it go if it’s not a big deal and if it needs to be corrected “just reply back to the sender letting them know about the mistake.”
I am a fan of Min’s post and I am TOTALLY down with the approach he suggested.
With this post, though, I want to focus on the times when the problem with the e-mail is a big deal.
There are times when, as lawyers and leaders, we really must say something.
I remember a time when I was copied on an email that was not only unprofessional, it was inappropriate.
Given that I was only copied on the e-mail, I thought long and hard about whether I would jump in and say something.
Say something, I did.
Not only was it the right thing to do, I felt I had to do it.
As Amanda Haverstick pointed out, the failure to speak up and speak out could have far reaching consequences because of my role as the in-house lawyer.
Granted, these moments are few and far between.
When faced with them, be professional, but say something.

WHAT IS MY SECRET NETWORKING ICE BREAKER?
Believe it or not, it has most recently been my orange Ohio Northern University sweatshirt.
Over the last year, I have traveled across the globe.
I have traveled to places like:
📌San Francisco, California,
📌Shelbyville, Kentucky, and
📌Las Vegas, Nevada.
In each of these places, it has been my sweatshirt that has been a great conversation starter.
Most recently, I connected with Lindsay Bragg from ContractSafe while at #ContractsCon 2024 here in Vegas, in large part, because I was wearing my ONU sweatshirt.
You see, Lindsay’s mom is what we at ONU like to call a double bear.
Say what?
You heard me right- a double bear.
The polar bear is ONU’s school mascot. Lindsay’s mom, Holly Bragg is a two time ONU alumnae graduating from ONU with both her accounting degree (Class of 80) and her law degree (Class of 82). She is, therefore, a double bear.
ONU is a special place AND a great place to work. ONU may be small, but it has THE most incredible alumni.
Lindsay and I bonded over stories about her mom and all her mom has accomplished since graduating from ONU.
Now retired, Holly Bragg not only had a long and successful career as a lawyer with Wells Fargo, she also got her pilot’s license!
Thanks for sharing stories of your mom with me, Lindsay.

Having a great time at ContractsCon in Vegas with some great LinkedIn friends!
Here's how my day has been:
- Rented a sports car off of Turo
- Drove 4 hours from LA
- Listened to a few true crimes podcasts along the way
- Checked in to my hotel and quickly changed into this ⬇️ outfit
- Headed to UNLV to catch the afternoon sessions
- Saw some old friends, met some LI friends in person, met some brand new friends altogether
- Watched the ContractsCon karaoke event and got two shout outs!! We've got some seriously creative and talented contracts professionals over here!
I'll post more tomorrow. Now it's time for dinner with my Lexion friends and then the Sphere with TermScout.

I also finally got a picture with the brilliant and hilarious, Krysta Johnson, a kindred spirit who was so nice in giving me some extra swag for contract managers on my team. The Lexion bags never disappoint. While we didn’t get a photo, I finally met Jessica Nguyen in person—so nice to spend time with her!
John Lindsey, I wish we’d gotten a picture… your jacket was excellent! Next year… in the meantime, we’ll have to plan a fun collaboration 🤩😉!

I have always felt awkward attending in-person CLE events.
I'd get myself worked up before with thoughts like, "Will I know anyone?", "Will I be able to sustain the small talk before and after the session?", and "Will people see my name tag and then just walk away because I don't have the title of someone they want to talk to?"
I also found a lot of the people at CLEs I attended spent most of it (breaks included) with their head down in their laptop or on their phone, signaling "Do not talk to me." I would pretend I was too so I didn't catch someone's look and then feel unsure if I'm supposed to wave, or go say hi, or what.
Because of that feeling, I generally stopped going to in-person events for most of my CLE requirements way before the pandemic. It just felt easier and less stressful to do it online. I didn't have to deal with the social anxiety part of it.
Yet for some reason, I decided that I needed to do a How to Contract in-person CLE event. My primary motivation was meeting all the people I'd gotten to know on LinkedIn. But once I got past that benefit, I realized I was going to have to create an event I normally don't enjoy going to.
It would have to be something that I and others like me would want to attend.
It had to be interactive, not just with the speakers but with each other.
It had to make everyone feel like they were among friends.
It had to be full of fun and laughter because that would limit my anxiety and boredom from taking over.
It had to be practical and apply to the work I do all the time so that I could pay attention for long periods.
Based on the feedback we've received, it sounds like it worked.
I will tell you that I have never felt more comfortable in a large group of people than I did at ContractsCon. There was so much joy in the air, so much support, and just so much interaction. I really loved every minute of it.
It only came together because of the amazing team that put it together - the speakers, the sponsors, Law Insider, Jane Kuhuk, and of course all of you who attended.
If you were there, keep watch over the next few business days for some messages coming from the How to Contract team (which really means from Jane the Amazing).
One of those messages will include the evaluation asking for your thoughts about the event. I really would appreciate it if you could answer all the questions so we have data about everyone's experiences.
Because we definitely want to do this again. :)

Two weeks ago today I returned from ContractsCon in Miami, Florida. What a fantastic event! Laura Frederick and her whole How to Contract team, including Flo Nicolas, Esq and Lisa ⚖️ Lang, provided context for a wonderful community to gather, learn, and build new friendships. (I can't remember the last time I had a 4-hour dinner -- what a great time Jennifer Zador Anthony Zampelli Timothy Mullens Jack Horgan Russ Edelman). The speakers were exceptional, the sessions were practical and helpful, and there were great vendors to meet and learn about. I hope to see many of you at the next event!

👀I looked into the audience, and I saw this young attorney with a horrified look, eyes bulging out. 😳
😜I looked at Lisa ⚖️ Lang and thought, "Oh S$*T⚠️ This is going to be a disaster.
📱Before long, I saw Maria Yiannitsarakos going around with her phone, showing attendees how to connect on #linkedin using their QR codes.
🤳Right behind Maria was Elena Kohn, Esq. one of the ContractsCon speakers, laughing, chatting, and connecting with attendees.
💥Within a minute, the room was loud with laughter and attendees moving from table to table, networking & connecting.
📌It can be scary to network with people you don't know but remember, they might be just as scared.

As most of you who follow me know, I always have plenty to say. But at this moment - the first morning after #ContractsCon - the words are not coming.
While I may not have words, what I do have is a lot of emotions. I'm talking a LOT of emotions.
Taking #ContractsCon from an idea to reality was one of the hardest things I've ever done (and I've done a lot of hard things).
Being at #ContractsCon was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life (and I've had a lot of amazing moments in my 54 years).
Just the size of it alone is overwhelming. We had over 600 people at ContractsCon, with almost 200 attending in person and 420ish people joining us virtually.
So I will gather my thoughts and share what my heart is feeling over the next week.
For now, I want to share this picture I took this morning. I stopped at one point and noticed what was in the suitcase I'd packed to return from Miami to Austin.
- A King Kong puppet, a gift from Elena Kohn, Esq. that I will treasure always, (She had the King Kong theme and used it during her "Let's Terminate Our Contract!" presentation.)
- Some swag from two of our incredible group of sponsors- a mug from #Contracts365 and the best tote ever from Lexion
- A few extra books that I was supposed to give away but forgot to until the last moments after the conference ended (Luckily a lot of people were lingering and there are just a few that I am bringing home).
- The heels I wore for the pre-event program day on Wednesday and the Toms flats I decided were a better choice on Thursday and Friday. (I know my cohosts Lisa ⚖️ Lang and Flo Nicolas, Esq get this!)
- The gorgeous program prepared by the incredible team Law Insider, my cohost for ContractsCon.

Did a fun CLE on dispute resolution clauses. And got trolled by my friends for dressing up as Iron Man.
I'm back in Orlando now and getting ready to put on a two-day rock concert. It's going to be an incredible party with thousands of fans listening to some face melting music—all to support mental health.
Who needs sleep when you're fueled by friendships, passions, and coffee?!

She did it!
Her Royal Highness, the Queen of Contracts Laura Frederick, has put together THE most practical and fun CLE I have ever attended! ContractsCon 2023 in Miami is in the books.
How did Laura do it? Instead of having stodgy theory recited from the stage, she invited practitioners to provide concrete advice and drafting examples with language and insight that is immediately applicable to one's daily legal practice.
Also, because it was ContractsCon, the speakers were all in character, ranging from Julia Childs and Darth Vader to Terminator and the whole Marvel Universe. The speakers were phenomenal!
(I'm not entirely sure what I did to deserve the honor of being one of the speakers. After several presentations and before it was my turn, I almost walked out -- that's how nervous I was but I couldn't let down my client (King Kong) and Laura. Presenting was fun and rewarding, however!)
I'm so grateful to Laura Frederick, Lisa ⚖️ Lang, Flo Nicolas, Esq and all the sponsors for organizing this dynamic and memorable event in beautiful Miami. Very grateful to my employer for giving me an opportunity to attend this event and improve my contract drafting and public speaking skills.

Who says legal events have to be dull and boring? Two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending #ContractsCon, and let me tell you, it was a game-changer!
I haven't always enjoyed legal conferences where the focus is a particular area of law, and I sometimes find them dull and lacking context. So it's safe to say I'm picky when choosing legal conferences.
#ContractsCon did not disappoint! The presentations were not your typical legal jargon-filled lectures, and they were engaging and entertaining, making the subject matter come to life. Min Cho had a marvel-themed presentation that made the marvel fanatic in me geek out and totally made my day.
One of my favorite things about the conference was the sense of community, and I got to connect and reconnect with some incredible people.
This picture is one of my favorite pictures from the event. Long after the event was over, we sat as a group and talked about everything from law school memories and our work to self-care as lawyers, and I loved it.
I left inspired, and what struck me the most was the realization that when we share our knowledge and ideas in a way that is accessible and easy to understand, we have the power to bring people together and make a real impact. That's exactly what Laura Frederick accomplished with this event. She found a unique way to make contracts less intimidating for everyone, and it reminded me to own my brilliance and embrace my unique perspective as I share my thoughts and ideas.
The law does not have to be boring.

In law school, yeah like 23 years ago 🫢, I got a C in contracts. That year-long class was evaluated solely on a single 6-essay-question, three-hour long final exam that sucked every molecule of oxygen out of my little lungs (and Back Then, we did our exams using ink in these little blue booklets that still give me chills and finger cramps to think about).
The combo of the academic inferiority complex, combined with being resigned to knowing my resume would Never get picked up during round 1 of on-campus recruiting, lead me create a career powered by sheer willpower, watching industry trends, working my network, figuring out what I liked, what I was good at and what restored my energy banks. I read a lot, kept taking classes on random things, and as soon as social media became A Thing, I devoured content from other industry thought leaders as fast as it was out.
Fast forward to February 2023, and I'm a speaker at #ContractsCon and talking about the industry nuances of NDAs and confidentiality agreements, and I'm still pinching myself.
A lifetime ago, despite graduating with honors, I still thought I was a loser nobody who didn't understand "contracts" because of a single grade on my transcript. Especially since that C haunted me in interviews for years. (Q: Why do people love asking why I got a C? Obviously because I'm stupid and you're smart? 🙄)
These days, I'm talking to a room of industry experts and professionals, people who are curious, kind and regularly challenging each other to do and be better for each other, our clients and customers, and the next generations who follow us.
Thank you to Laura Frederick and her team at #HowToContract for creating a truly beautiful thing with this event and organization. We needed this space and place to discuss our craft, art, technique, language, tone. There is a what, why, who, where, and how to what we do that extends way beyond the hairy hand and consideration.
Whatever- I still need to look those up, but tbh, I think we all just did. 👀

My excitement about attending #ContractsCon this past weekend is best represented by the attached image of my daughter. Her enthusiasm for Gatekeeper 's little blue dragon stuffy I brought home from the event is appropriate to describe #ContractsCon because it was put together so well I forgot it was CLE. Filled with incredibly impressive and knowledgeable speakers, great sponsors, and a variety of fellow attendees - #ContractsCon was rigorous but SO FUN!
You may be thinking, how could a convention about contracts be fun? Answer: Laura Frederick. I've watched Laura's journey from the start and "meteoric rise" may best describe her How to Contract journey, because she hits one home run after another and manages to bring the right people together like a magician.
In 2020, while surfing LinkedIn, I came across one of Laura's daily contract tip posts (the posts that led to her How to Contract business). I found her content so helpful, and the comments section so engaging, that a natural habit formed. I began opening LinkedIn daily to read Laura's latest post and cartoon, then peruse the comments full of insightful discussions between people located all over the world.
When Laura published her first book, How to Contract, I bought the Kindle version for my iPad. Then I joined her membership-based group. I learned more from Laura than I could've imagined and yet remain stunned, though not entirely surprised, that law schools remain bereft of this useful content. (I continue to believe Laura's How to Contract should be taught in every law school.) Little did I know that, armed with invaluable knowledge, within a couple years I'd fast track my way to a role where I am managing and training a brand new corporate counsel with no prior contracting experience. Naturally, my first bit of actionable advice for them was to buy Laura's second How to Contract book and read it a few times.
#ContractsCon was even more awesome than I expected, which is saying a lot since I already thought it would be amazing.
Even though lawyers tend to be the target audience, there were some business professionals in attendance and wow that choice is very wise! A business leader could benefit enormously by learning more about the legal and contracting side of the business. Although lawyers and contract managers need to learn about the business, it often isn't the other way around and yet doing so is a great strategic advantage for many reasons.
No matter how much experience one has with contracts, there's something useful at #ContractsCon - whether to learn about contracting and negotiating basics, validate that how you already do things is in line with best practices, experience a structured refresher on contracts, learn some new skills, or to network and make friends with similar interests.

ContractsCon Day 2! Highlights for me were: (1) Meeting Sterling Miller in person! If you don't already follow Sterling's blog, you should. It's lnkd.in/ehyxCCQu. (2) Sommer Coutu's and Annmarie Giblin's presentation on managing cybersecurity risk with liability, insurance, and indemnification provisions. I took a ton of notes. (3) the small group exercise for Hebe Doneski's and Laura Frederick's presentation on how to de-risk contract formation (orders, order of precedence, and online terms). (4) Foster Sayers walking into the Starbucks located in the University with his guitar, the barista asking if he was a music professor, and him answering no, he was here for a conference and sometimes he sings about contracts.(5) New Contract Nerds swag, stickers and bookmarks! (6) The networking exercise where we had to connect with ten new people on LinkedIn, another attendee and I seeing we were already connected and tracing it back to one of Shai Mehani's In-House Connect events.
I'm scheduled to fly home tomorrow, but the way the weather in New York is looking like that flight may get cancelled. I can't say that would make me sad since it means I can go to day 3. If not, I'll see you next year! Thank you Lisa ⚖️ Lang for getting photos of yesterday's Contracts Karaoke!

It’s been another AMAZING #ContractsCon from How to Contract. Congratulations, Laura Frederick! You set a new bar for having fun while learning about contracts. The costumes you and other speakers wore added so much to the event.
I realized too late that I did not get enough pictures with friends at the event but was very glad for the ones I did manage to grab with Nada Alnajafi, Shai Mehani, Lucy Bassli, and Lara Trope. (BTW, when you all experience pajama day at a future conference, please know it was born of an afternoon chat I had with Lara and Lucy 😆😉).

I did finally get a picture with the OG Legal Influencer and the one that first inspired me to put out my own content, Sterling Miller. If you can believe it… he’s also the caveman presenting behind all that hair. 😂
I also finally got a picture with the brilliant and hilarious, Krysta Johnson, a kindred spirit who was so nice in giving me some extra swag for contract managers on my team. The Lexion bags never disappoint. While we didn’t get a photo, I finally met Jessica Nguyen in person—so nice to spend time with her!
John Lindsey, I wish we’d gotten a picture… your jacket was excellent! Next year… in the meantime, we’ll have to plan a fun collaboration 🤩😉!

Kicking off the new year with #ContractsCon2024 hosted by How to Contract!
It's one of the best ways to jam all sorts of great contract knowledge right into your brain.
While I'm looking forward to all of the sessions, there are a few in particular that I don't want to miss:
✔ How to Manage Cybersecurity Risk with Liability, Insurance, and Indemnification Provisions, with Sommer Coutu and Annmarie Giblin. Cybersecurity is top of mind for both customers and vendors, so I'm looking forward to learning about current best practices for mitigating these risks.
✔ How to Review and Negotiate the Other Party's DPA, with Jessica Nguyen and Krysta Johnson. Data privacy requirements are always changing, so I'm looking forward to learning how counterparties expect you to comply...and how to push back when they're being unreasonable. Also jokes. I'm expecting lots of jokes. 😂
✔ How to Build Trust in Negotiations by Keld Jensen. This is one of two sessions that I'm looking forward to that isn't about a substantive legal concept, but should be just as helpful. I've lately become interested in how parties can establish trust in negotiations, so this sounds perfect.
✔ How to Negotiate Without Power, by Kwame Christian, Esq., M.A. This is the other session that isn't about a substantive legal concept, but rather the process of negotiating. We all find ourselves negotiating without leverage (sometimes more than we'd like), so I'm hoping to pick up some actionable advice from one of the best.
❄ I'll be attending ContractsCon virtually from Pittsburgh, where it's going to be about 8 degrees outside.
🏒 Unfortunately, since I won't be in Vegas in person, I'm going to miss the perfect chance to knock off one of my bucket list items: catching a hockey game in Vegas. My hometown Penguins 🐧 play the Golden Knights on Saturday and it would have been great to spend a few days in Vegas talking contracts and then cap off the trip with a hockey game.

WHEN YOU HEAR SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING
Last night, I went to a dinner hosted by Jessica Nguyen and Krysta Johnson of Lexion after the conclusion of an amazing first conference day for #ContractsCon 2024.
Dinner was such a great opportunity to get to know speakers and participants.
I engaged in so many great conversations. One conversation I had was with Min Cho and Amanda Haverstick.
We talked about a great post by Min.

In his post, Min talked about when “you’re on an email chain with lots of people, and the last sender sent you an email with a mistake, don’t ‘reply all’ pointing out the error. “
Instead, Min suggested letting it go if it’s not a big deal and if it needs to be corrected “just reply back to the sender letting them know about the mistake.”
I am a fan of Min’s post and I am TOTALLY down with the approach he suggested.
With this post, though, I want to focus on the times when the problem with the e-mail is a big deal.
There are times when, as lawyers and leaders, we really must say something.
I remember a time when I was copied on an email that was not only unprofessional, it was inappropriate.
Given that I was only copied on the e-mail, I thought long and hard about whether I would jump in and say something.
Say something, I did.
Not only was it the right thing to do, I felt I had to do it.
As Amanda Haverstick pointed out, the failure to speak up and speak out could have far reaching consequences because of my role as the in-house lawyer.
Granted, these moments are few and far between.
When faced with them, be professional, but say something.

WHAT IS MY SECRET NETWORKING ICE BREAKER?
Believe it or not, it has most recently been my orange Ohio Northern University sweatshirt.
Over the last year, I have traveled across the globe.
I have traveled to places like:
📌San Francisco, California,
📌Shelbyville, Kentucky, and
📌Las Vegas, Nevada.
In each of these places, it has been my sweatshirt that has been a great conversation starter.
Most recently, I connected with Lindsay Bragg from ContractSafe while at #ContractsCon 2024 here in Vegas, in large part, because I was wearing my ONU sweatshirt.
You see, Lindsay’s mom is what we at ONU like to call a double bear.
Say what?
You heard me right- a double bear.
The polar bear is ONU’s school mascot. Lindsay’s mom, Holly Bragg is a two time ONU alumnae graduating from ONU with both her accounting degree (Class of 80) and her law degree (Class of 82). She is, therefore, a double bear.
ONU is a special place AND a great place to work. ONU may be small, but it has THE most incredible alumni.
Lindsay and I bonded over stories about her mom and all her mom has accomplished since graduating from ONU.
Now retired, Holly Bragg not only had a long and successful career as a lawyer with Wells Fargo, she also got her pilot’s license!
Thanks for sharing stories of your mom with me, Lindsay.

Here's how my day has been:
- Rented a sports car off of Turo
- Drove 4 hours from LA
- Listened to a few true crimes podcasts along the way
- Checked in to my hotel and quickly changed into this ⬇️ outfit
- Headed to UNLV to catch the afternoon sessions
- Saw some old friends, met some LI friends in person, met some brand new friends altogether
- Watched the ContractsCon karaoke event and got two shout outs!! We've got some seriously creative and talented contracts professionals over here!
I'll post more tomorrow. Now it's time for dinner with my Lexion friends and then the Sphere with TermScout.

I have always felt awkward attending in-person CLE events.
I'd get myself worked up before with thoughts like, "Will I know anyone?", "Will I be able to sustain the small talk before and after the session?", and "Will people see my name tag and then just walk away because I don't have the title of someone they want to talk to?"
I also found a lot of the people at CLEs I attended spent most of it (breaks included) with their head down in their laptop or on their phone, signaling "Do not talk to me." I would pretend I was too so I didn't catch someone's look and then feel unsure if I'm supposed to wave, or go say hi, or what.
Because of that feeling, I generally stopped going to in-person events for most of my CLE requirements way before the pandemic. It just felt easier and less stressful to do it online. I didn't have to deal with the social anxiety part of it.
Yet for some reason, I decided that I needed to do a How to Contract in-person CLE event. My primary motivation was meeting all the people I'd gotten to know on LinkedIn. But once I got past that benefit, I realized I was going to have to create an event I normally don't enjoy going to.
It would have to be something that I and others like me would want to attend.
It had to be interactive, not just with the speakers but with each other.
It had to make everyone feel like they were among friends.
It had to be full of fun and laughter because that would limit my anxiety and boredom from taking over.
It had to be practical and apply to the work I do all the time so that I could pay attention for long periods.
Based on the feedback we've received, it sounds like it worked.
I will tell you that I have never felt more comfortable in a large group of people than I did at ContractsCon. There was so much joy in the air, so much support, and just so much interaction. I really loved every minute of it.
It only came together because of the amazing team that put it together - the speakers, the sponsors, Law Insider, Jane Kuhuk, and of course all of you who attended.
If you were there, keep watch over the next few business days for some messages coming from the How to Contract team (which really means from Jane the Amazing).
One of those messages will include the evaluation asking for your thoughts about the event. I really would appreciate it if you could answer all the questions so we have data about everyone's experiences.
Because we definitely want to do this again. :)

Two weeks ago today I returned from ContractsCon in Miami, Florida. What a fantastic event! Laura Frederick and her whole How to Contract team, including Flo Nicolas, Esq and Lisa ⚖️ Lang, provided context for a wonderful community to gather, learn, and build new friendships. (I can't remember the last time I had a 4-hour dinner -- what a great time Jennifer Zador Anthony Zampelli Timothy Mullens Jack Horgan Russ Edelman). The speakers were exceptional, the sessions were practical and helpful, and there were great vendors to meet and learn about. I hope to see many of you at the next event!

📌After day 1 of the conference, Lisa ⚖️ Lang & I had a challenge for the attendees.
🛑"Before you leave today, we ask that you network with each other. The challenge is to connect with 10 new people."
👀I looked into the audience, and I saw this young attorney with a horrified look, eyes bulging out. 😳
😜I looked at Lisa ⚖️ Lang and thought, "Oh S$*T⚠️ This is going to be a disaster.
📱Before long, I saw Maria Yiannitsarakos going around with her phone, showing attendees how to connect on #linkedin using their QR codes.
🤳Right behind Maria was Elena Kohn, Esq. one of the ContractsCon speakers, laughing, chatting, and connecting with attendees.
💥Within a minute, the room was loud with laughter and attendees moving from table to table, networking & connecting.
📌It can be scary to network with people you don't know but remember, they might be just as scared.
🔥I am so proud of my dear friend Laura Frederick, who has been crowned the Queen of Contracts.🔥

As most of you who follow me know, I always have plenty to say. But at this moment - the first morning after #ContractsCon - the words are not coming.
While I may not have words, what I do have is a lot of emotions. I'm talking a LOT of emotions.
Taking #ContractsCon from an idea to reality was one of the hardest things I've ever done (and I've done a lot of hard things).
Being at #ContractsCon was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life (and I've had a lot of amazing moments in my 54 years).
Just the size of it alone is overwhelming. We had over 600 people at ContractsCon, with almost 200 attending in person and 420ish people joining us virtually.
So I will gather my thoughts and share what my heart is feeling over the next week.
For now, I want to share this picture I took this morning. I stopped at one point and noticed what was in the suitcase I'd packed to return from Miami to Austin.
- A King Kong puppet, a gift from Elena Kohn, Esq. that I will treasure always, (She had the King Kong theme and used it during her "Let's Terminate Our Contract!" presentation.)
- Some swag from two of our incredible group of sponsors- a mug from #Contracts365 and the best tote ever from Lexion
- A few extra books that I was supposed to give away but forgot to until the last moments after the conference ended (Luckily a lot of people were lingering and there are just a few that I am bringing home).
- The heels I wore for the pre-event program day on Wednesday and the Toms flats I decided were a better choice on Thursday and Friday. (I know my cohosts Lisa ⚖️ Lang and Flo Nicolas, Esq get this!)
- The gorgeous program prepared by the incredible team Law Insider, my cohost for ContractsCon.
For those of you who attended, stay tuned for ways to keep our community alive. I'll share more next week.

I am so incredibly honored that she asked that I join her and Flo Nicolas LIVE and IN PERSON to co-host. While I will be on ContractCon's main stage with Laura to host the event and help coordinate the amazing speakers and training, Flo will be coordinating the virtual portion.
I know I am excited to see each of the speakers Laura handpicked to participate in the conference this year.
Each speaker has a presence on LinkedIn and are phenomenal in their own right.
I am excited to meet each and every single one in person.

The past two days have been totally wild!
Drove to Miami for ContractsCon and got to hang out with a bunch of LinkedIn friends IRL—some for the first time ever!
Did a fun CLE on dispute resolution clauses. And got trolled by my friends for dressing up as Iron Man.
I'm back in Orlando now and getting ready to put on a two-day rock concert. It's going to be an incredible party with thousands of fans listening to some face melting music—all to support mental health.
Who needs sleep when you're fueled by friendships, passions, and coffee?!

I am embarrassed to say it's been a very long time since I've learned anything from CLE. However, by bringing together procurement professionals, contracting managers, and lawyers into one conference, I learned so much at #contractscon including what I litigation hold is and why they are needed 😂 I also made some lifelong friends. I'm like the sad kid leaving summer camp, already planning for next year!!
