I've been reading Journaology for about a year when it was brought to my attention, and since then I've found it to be an inexhaustible source of information, points of view, and facts related to the turbulent world of science communication. I have been working in this field for over 40 years, and I have seen the profound changes that have occurred in the world of scientific publishing. Journaology has helped me and is helping me to understand the transformations underway and to use them to better clarify to my young collaborators how to tackle the problem of scientific communication today.

My goal as an editor was always to make people look forward with anticipation to that moment when the next issue would emerge. Congratulations to James Butcher for achieving exactly that, with his ever-timely, ever-insightful and never-dogmatic collating and commenting on research publishing in Journalology.

In writing and sharing Journalology with the publishing community each week, James accumulates and condenses key news, updates and developments in the industry into an easily digestible format, whilst providing his own insights and all of the necessary links for you to dig into topics further or check on the source information. This is invaluable, as he brings a new perspective to some news items, reminders of the people behind the publishers, and highlights progress which I would likely not have the time to dig into myself otherwise. I’ve been a subscriber for around a year or so now, and really enjoy sitting down with a cup of tea and reading through the newsletter each week. I really enjoy the news and journal club sections, and feel that Journalology should be an essential weekly read for anyone working within scholarly publishers, or in affiliated roles, to keep you abreast of changes and help you make informed decisions within your role.

I read James' newsletter every week and find it an excellent source of information on all things editorial and scientific publishing, with a refreshing editor viewpoint. It is an insightful (and fun!) read, perfect for everyone interested in the scientific publishing world. In a super busy world, flagging the newsletter and making time to read it with a cuppa is a rare oasis in my week that I very much enjoy.

This is consistently one of the most interesting newsletters covering the publishing industry - however it should be read by everyone with an interest in the sector. Informed analysis from someone who knows what they are talking about. I look forward to reading it when it pops into my inbox

Journalology is an incredibly useful tool to start my week. It gives a comprehensive update on what's happening in the field with insight from all perspectives (publisher, researcher, institutions, as well as STM and HSS). I enjoy the opinion given on each piece as much as reading the news itself. The links provided also allow for more in-depth diving if desired. I look forward to it every week!

Journalology has become a permanent fixture of my Monday routine: I love that it keeps me up to date with what's going on in scientific publishing while sipping my coffee and getting ready for the week ahead. Everyone with an interest in this industry should read it, not just for the clever selection of content but also for the insightful commentary from James, who knows publishing inside out.

Journalology gives an update on a wide range of areas within scholarly publishing. James's summaries of the links very clearly tells you what the particular story is about, and allows you to decide whether you want to read further or not. I often find myself with 5 or 6 new pieces to read when I've read Journalology, but don't let that put you off! This is an indication of how relevant the content is to those working in all areas of scholarly publishing. Journalology is my most useful and most used source of updated information.

I've subscribed to Journalology since I entered the publishing industry 7 years ago. It's a nice way to start my day as I scan through publishing news and opinion pieces before diving into specific ones to get more detail. Often, the newsletter covers stories and reports I haven't come across with other newsletters or Google alerts-- which is incredibly useful! The commentary on pieces is especially valuable, as it gives me a quick idea of what is most relevant to me, saving me time. Anyone in the publishing industry should read this!

I have been reading Journalology for a couple of weeks now and got completely hooked. As Editor-in-Chief of a journal, it provides essential background reading which helps me understand better the rapidly changing publishing landscape. This should in turn help me to best position the journal for the long term. In addition to the above, it is useful to learn what is being done elsewhere to counteract such activities as paper mills or how to deal with (part) AI-generated content. In short, I think any EiC would greatly benefit from subscribing to Journalology, and reading its content!

Journalology goes beyond the surface of scholarly publishing, delivering comprehensive and informative content that's surprisingly engaging. JB, via the newsletter, doesn't just present facts -- he unpacks them with insightful analysis and real-world context. This makes it a valuable resource for anyone in academia, publishing technology, or even language technology. The newsletter consistently delivers the latest updates on the field, making it the go-to source for anyone who wants to stay ahead of the curve in scholarly publishing. If you ask me, it is the clear leader among scholarly publishing newsletters.

Journalology is an essential resource for individuals navigating transitions, whether transitioning from an academic role to the publishing industry, advancing from an early to a mid/advanced career stage, or adjusting to substantial organizational transformations. In my personal experience, it played a pivotal role during crucial career transitions, effectively bridging any knowledge gaps and providing a broadened perspective. Most importantly, its analyses assisted me in understanding and, at times, anticipating market trends, facilitating informed career decisions as new developments were taking shape. As a former philologist interested in historiography and science history, I would also add that Journalology is more than just an invaluable tool for professionals. It stands as a timeless chronicle for individuals fascinated by the history of science information. If anyone embarks one day on the daunting task of compiling a handbook on the history of scholarly publishing, Journalology will undoubtedly provide a compelling starting point.

Journalology certainly plugs a gap for our industry. Scanning scholarly publishing related news is, like James says, akin to drinking from a fire hose so having this digest land in my inbox each week has not only saved me a lot of time, but has also alerted me to things that I would no doubt have missed myself. What I value most is the annotations because often they are enough to answer any questions I may have had around a news item, so once again it saves time because I don't always need to read the full item (but of course a link to the source is always provided should anyone want to dig deeper). Definitely 5 star!

While I subscribed fairly early to Journalology. I find myself paying more and more attention to it. There's a bit of a distance between the items and my focus on small, mainly Canadian, SSH journals but gaining a sense of the larger picture is always useful. It's actually astonishing how much is going on world wide.
