I've been reading Journaology for about a year when it was brought to my attention, and since then I've found it to be an inexhaustible source of information, points of view, and facts related to the turbulent world of science communication. I have been working in this field for over 40 years, and I have seen the profound changes that have occurred in the world of scientific publishing. Journaology has helped me and is helping me to understand the transformations underway and to use them to better clarify to my young collaborators how to tackle the problem of scientific communication today.

In writing and sharing Journalology with the publishing community each week, James accumulates and condenses key news, updates and developments in the industry into an easily digestible format, whilst providing his own insights and all of the necessary links for you to dig into topics further or check on the source information. This is invaluable, as he brings a new perspective to some news items, reminders of the people behind the publishers, and highlights progress which I would likely not have the time to dig into myself otherwise. I’ve been a subscriber for around a year or so now, and really enjoy sitting down with a cup of tea and reading through the newsletter each week. I really enjoy the news and journal club sections, and feel that Journalology should be an essential weekly read for anyone working within scholarly publishers, or in affiliated roles, to keep you abreast of changes and help you make informed decisions within your role.

I read James' newsletter every week and find it an excellent source of information on all things editorial and scientific publishing, with a refreshing editor viewpoint. It is an insightful (and fun!) read, perfect for everyone interested in the scientific publishing world. In a super busy world, flagging the newsletter and making time to read it with a cuppa is a rare oasis in my week that I very much enjoy.

Journalology is an incredibly useful tool to start my week. It gives a comprehensive update on what's happening in the field with insight from all perspectives (publisher, researcher, institutions, as well as STM and HSS). I enjoy the opinion given on each piece as much as reading the news itself. The links provided also allow for more in-depth diving if desired. I look forward to it every week!

Journalology gives an update on a wide range of areas within scholarly publishing. James's summaries of the links very clearly tells you what the particular story is about, and allows you to decide whether you want to read further or not. I often find myself with 5 or 6 new pieces to read when I've read Journalology, but don't let that put you off! This is an indication of how relevant the content is to those working in all areas of scholarly publishing. Journalology is my most useful and most used source of updated information.

I've subscribed to Journalology since I entered the publishing industry 7 years ago. It's a nice way to start my day as I scan through publishing news and opinion pieces before diving into specific ones to get more detail. Often, the newsletter covers stories and reports I haven't come across with other newsletters or Google alerts-- which is incredibly useful! The commentary on pieces is especially valuable, as it gives me a quick idea of what is most relevant to me, saving me time. Anyone in the publishing industry should read this!

I have been reading Journalology for a couple of weeks now and got completely hooked. As Editor-in-Chief of a journal, it provides essential background reading which helps me understand better the rapidly changing publishing landscape. This should in turn help me to best position the journal for the long term. In addition to the above, it is useful to learn what is being done elsewhere to counteract such activities as paper mills or how to deal with (part) AI-generated content. In short, I think any EiC would greatly benefit from subscribing to Journalology, and reading its content!

Journalology is an essential resource for individuals navigating transitions, whether transitioning from an academic role to the publishing industry, advancing from an early to a mid/advanced career stage, or adjusting to substantial organizational transformations. In my personal experience, it played a pivotal role during crucial career transitions, effectively bridging any knowledge gaps and providing a broadened perspective. Most importantly, its analyses assisted me in understanding and, at times, anticipating market trends, facilitating informed career decisions as new developments were taking shape. As a former philologist interested in historiography and science history, I would also add that Journalology is more than just an invaluable tool for professionals. It stands as a timeless chronicle for individuals fascinated by the history of science information. If anyone embarks one day on the daunting task of compiling a handbook on the history of scholarly publishing, Journalology will undoubtedly provide a compelling starting point.

Journalology certainly plugs a gap for our industry. Scanning scholarly publishing related news is, like James says, akin to drinking from a fire hose so having this digest land in my inbox each week has not only saved me a lot of time, but has also alerted me to things that I would no doubt have missed myself. What I value most is the annotations because often they are enough to answer any questions I may have had around a news item, so once again it saves time because I don't always need to read the full item (but of course a link to the source is always provided should anyone want to dig deeper). Definitely 5 star!

I really enjoy reading Journalology. After leaving the books side of the business, I'm still a bit new to the journal world, and the newsletter helps me understand the different dimensions and complexities from an unbiased perspective. My problem is I have a hard time reading all the articles I want! It would be good at the top of the newsletter to list the linked headlines so that you can cherry pick from the top the most impactful topics relative to you versus scrolling down (and then realizing you don't have enough time to read all the good stuff). Thank you for your valuable insights and clarity!

The #1 best thing about Journalology is how accessible it is - it is an effortless read that flows exceptionally well and keeps me 100% engaged, which is hard to do in this world of distractions and constant looming deadlines. It's like watching an Olympic skier do the slalom - it looks so easy, and it's a pleasure to watch (plus a little nerve-wracking, just like publishing!). But behind the scenes, the effort that James Butcher puts into these newsletters to give us that user experience is phenomenal. It's my favorite newsletter and it inspires thought-provoking questions each and every week among our American Urological Association publications team. Who should read this newsletter? That's easy - anybody who wants to not only survive but THRIVE in scholarly publishing. This newsletter is the key to keeping me relevant and knowledgeable in this ever-changing environment. Thank you, James, for Journalology. I also want to point out to the scholarly publishing community that James interacts on a personal level with his readers. James has picked up the phone to call me, interacted on social media with me, etc. in direct response to my questions and concerns. And he does that for everyone. Not only is the newsletter a tremendous resource, but James is a valuable leader of our community. Thank you!

Journalology has helped me understand publishing so much more in the few weeks that I've been reading it.

What I enjoy most about Journalology is the writer dedicates to interpret the significance of the relevant publishing news in a balanced way as well as helps to translate the findings from the business report, publishing trends, other related endeavours. Journalology is particular fitting to those who enter the publishing career at their early stage (in the first 5 years) or the people who's eager to engage with the publishing community with their research, where Journalology supports to improve the transparency and efficiency of the communication between publishers and researchers worldwide. I also find it's useful for me to stay connected more easily with the current trends of scholarly publishing, James always uses the concise and plain language to explain the new or a little bit complex concepts or situation, which enable every reader to have clear understanding of how the things connect together. I definitely recommend Journalology to more people!

I am really enjoying the Journalology newsletter. It’s the right combination of analysis from James Butcher with pointers to what I may have missed. Many times I may have skimmed a few of the articles he selects to highlight already, but having them in one digest is very helpful. As a publication manager, this newsletter is a time saver for my team in sharing interesting posts with our journal editors. The focus on editorial topics and the curation of content from someone with James’ experience ensures that our journal editors are staying up to date. Recommended reading from the newsletter often ends up on our agendas with editors. Journalology is a great compliment to other regular digests and newsletters that help keep me in the know.

I really enjoy reading Journaology as it provides a good overview of what is going on in the journals world right now and also because I trust James to give an objective and fair representation of views. I think anyone who works in scholarly publishing would benefit from reading the newsletter even if they don't directly work on journals. The world is changing as is the way people access and read information, therefore, it is good to understand what that means and how to relates to your part of the publishing business. Even though I think the newsletter does a good job at keeping me up to date, I would love to see more about scholarly publishing in the humanities and social sciences and how big broad changes in policy, funding, business models and partnerships affects this side of research.

Keeping up with the latest in the scientific publishing is no small feat: from changes to business landscape to research on peer review, and anything in between. Journalology newsletter fills therefore an important gap and comes with valuable commentary of someone who understands both the editorial nuances and publishing realities. It has something for every professional working in this field, and will sometimes also surprise you with a good quote (there are a lot of very quotable people among editors apparently; Richard Smith's quote from Journalology #3 is my favourite - you should go and check it out).

Despite struggling slightly to pronounce its name, I've quickly become a big fan of Journalology. The newsletter offers a great recap of news from the industry and James's insights give a good level of background context. I often share the latest issues with publishing friends. Keep up to good work!

Journalology is unique in its ability to engage publishers, editors, and academics alike. The newsletter keeps me in the loop on the important things happening in the world of publishing and has been particularly valuable in recent months with major shifts occurring in the open access space. I always look forward to the newsletter and would recommend to anyone with even a minor stake in scholarly publishing.

I enjoy reading Journalology as it explores the enduring tension between editorial prerogative and publishing priorities that all publishing professionals must contend with. It's also provides a great wrap-up of weekly news so that I can keep up with industry updates without having to crawl the web. Highly recommended.

I always enjoy reading Journalology. It's a good mix of the latest news in scholarly publishing, often from channels I wouldn't normally come across, and a more in-depth analysis of a particular timely topic. I have recommended it to colleauges and our editors - a great resource for everyone in scholarly publishing.

The level of insight is remarkable, I highly recommend that you give Journalology a try.

The Journalology newsletter is highly engaging, informative, and action oriented to say the least. In fact, I find their positioning statement, “a newsletter for journal editors” to be a bit restrictive. The accurate and incisive contents of this newsletter are useful for audiences much beyond journal editors and help you remain abreast of stuff that matters to journals and journal editors. You're missing out if you aren't a subscriber already. Highly recommended!

I look forward to the newsletter every week. So much so that the odd times when the newsletter hasn't come through because James is on holiday or at a conference etc, I have emailed him to ask why I haven't received it!! It is a very useful resource for anyone working in scholarly publications and specially for those responsible for the management and strategy of publications. It gives a snapshot and useful insights on all important developments in the field. It is so handy to have all info in one place! I wish James very best.

The Journalology newsletter is my secret weapon for keeping up with what's happening in the scholarly publishing industry. It offers a broad and deep view of the latest news and developments, peppered with insightful and thought-provoking commentary along the way. It is one of the few newsletters that I consistently read from top to bottom every time.

I've been subscribed to Journalology since James first started it in 2022. Since then, I can honestly say that not a single week has gone by when I havent found the collated news shared by James useful. It always provides a concise, well curated and time efficient way to keep up to date on current news and developments. James' witty comments and insight make each newsletter an entertaining and articulate read.

As a new editor, I felt there was a need to know more about the ecosystem and given the workload that we have, it is impossible to browse through the publishing websites and stay up to date. While I was struggling to understand nuances of the industry, James launched this newsletter and to my surprise, it was a wealth of knowledge for newbies like me. It is interesting to also hear James' perspective on the stories and events, given his rich experience in the industry and various roles. I am sure all editors, enjoy his newsletter packed with news, trends, historical context and contemporary significance packed with a pinch of humor.
