Material Sustainability Professional
Hello! My name is Nelson and I'm a material sustainability professional based in Colorado. I recently finished the Biomimicry Practitioner program with an interest in a life-friendly chemistry fishing line.
This learning journey has not only brought me closer to the natural world I love, but also helped me to look at nature's design genius in a much deeper and more thought provoking way.
I truly cannot say enough amazing things about this course, including all of the members and mentors at Learn Biomimicry who are all INCREDIBLE! How they approached, taught, and mentored the course was better than any university class I ever took. They were always happy to help and extremely insightful.
Although the course itself is over, I've come to learn how infinite the possibilities and opportunities are by adopting a biomimicry mindset, which has set me out on a wonderful lifelong journey.
A huge thanks to the Learn Biomimicry team, this course has changed my life.

I am a mechanical engineer who recently started working in the field. I realized that what I thought engineering was in practice and what it actually is didn't align as well as I hoped it would. However after taking part in this course, I realized what engineering CAN be for me if I just approach it from the right angle and through the correct lens.
This course not only changed the trajectory of my career, it also opened my eyes and reminded me of all the amazing things that our beautiful world has to offer. I feel this has been the turning point in my life that I have been trying to manifest.

The biomimicry practitioner program was by far the best career and general life decision I have ever made. The program completely challenged the way I had viewed knowledge - not just the world.
Often, in career and academia, we are taught to reproduce singular forms of knowledge that are linear in nature - whilst most of the anthropogenic challenges we face in the world are often interdisciplinary and complex.
Biomimicry is a perfect response to applying cross-disciplinary and systems thinking to practical challenges that most disciplines cannot solve alone, moving away from linear thinking and into harmony with nature's regenerative cycles.
The program gives you the creative freedom to step out of restrictive thinking and provides a lens which can be applied in virtually every industry and role.
My project allowed me to think critically and design a portable, lightweight air pollution filter which could not only capture emissions but use the emissions as feedstocks for resource-intensive industries. It didn't take too long until I decided to expand on my learnings and apply systems thinking and cyclical principles from nature to develop my own start-up which draws its inspiration from industrial ecology - where companies can work in symbiotic relationships to develop more sustainable outcomes in their supply chains.
Before long, I was inspired by the way slime mould finds its quickest path to success by stripping away layers of hierarchy and allowing cells to self-organize, and applied this design to a digital platform.
I am forever indebted to the wonderful team at Learn Biomimicry - they provided a space to learn, reflect, create and innovate, these skills will stay with me for the rest of my life.
As Jess had wonderfully said in our final presentations, the end was really just the beginning, and this holds very true.

Research engineer in computational science
The feedback from the Biomimicry Practitioner Programme helped guide my system-level mindset, encouraged the development of an internal framework for practicing biomimicry and expanded what I knew was possible in regenerative design.
The curriculum provided practical tools to navigate complex challenges by grounding creative problem-solving in specific design constraints and context, while simultaneously expanding my realm of potential design ideas through biological inspiration.
Moving forward, I plan to apply biomimicry to my work by abstracting design principles from natural systems to encourage resilient and regenerative human systems.

Fluid and Hydromechanical engineer, Airbus
I am working as a fluid hydromech engineer at Airbus. I was fascinated by biomimicry applied to engineering and took up the Biomimicry Short Courses and Biomimicry Practitioner Programme.
It was an exciting journey for me to apply and work on the process step by step while doing my project. My goal was at the end to think of biomimicry as the first tool to solve any problem and I was pleased at the end of the course that I could think like this

I am a Design and Technology teacher with a particular interest in jewellery design and making. Before undertaking the Biomimicry Practitioner Programme, I had already incorporated biomimicry into the KS3 lessons I delivered and designed jewellery inspired by nature at a form level.
I chose to undertake this course to challenge myself, extend my knowledge and deepen my understanding of biomimicry. I am so glad I did! The course has allowed me to explore how nature works at a much deeper level, looking beyond form to understand processes and the relationships within ecosystems.
Observing organisms at macro, micro and nano scales has helped me develop a greater understanding of the chemistry and physics behind natural systems. It has also fuelled my curiosity about the materials involved and helped me begin to bridge the gap between design and function by identifying and extracting design principles from nature.
One of the most valuable things I have learned is that there are often hidden functions within organisms that only become apparent as your knowledge and understanding deepen.
This has completely changed the way I look at nature and approach design. Learning from nature has also changed the way I feel about, respect and appreciate the natural world. It has genuinely been a life-changing experience.
Throughout the course, I have learned a great deal about my own learning style, too. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience, particularly the Scoping and Create stages, where I could undertake research, experiment with materials and explore ideas in greater depth.
The course has not always been easy, but the whole team at the Learn Biomimicry has been incredibly supportive, offering guidance, encouragement and patience throughout the past six months. I am very grateful for their support.
For anyone considering undertaking the course, my advice would be to work through the lessons and tasks in order, rather than jumping ahead. This will help with your organisation and planning as you progress through each phase. I would also strongly recommend communicating regularly with both your mentor and your Co-Pilot. Everyone is busy, so I suggest contacting your Co-Pilot right at the start to introduce yourself and establish that connection.
As you progress through the course, there may be times when you need their support, and having that relationship in place can make a real difference. I feel this is just the beginning of a new journey, and I look forward to continuing along my biomimicry path, exploring new possibilities and bringing what I have learned into my teaching and jewellery design practice.
Thank you again to everyone at the Learn Biomimicry for such an amazing and rewarding experience!

Packaging Designer at Logoplaste Innovation Lab
I’m a Packaging Designer working across a wide range of plastic packaging categories, including Personal Care, Home Care, Dairy & Alternatives, and Food. We work with global partners and brands such as P&G, Heinz, L’Oréal, among others.
Learning from nature has changed the way I approach design challenges. It has taught me to be more curious, to observe more carefully, and to question solutions that we often take for granted. Instead of immediately looking for answers in existing products or technologies,
I now try to understand the problem more deeply and explore different ways of solving it. Above all, biomimicry has taught me that nature is not just a source of inspiration, but a different way of thinking about design.
One of the best things about these courses is the way they are structured. The format gives us the flexibility to manage our time and workload in the way that suits us best, making it much easier to balance the course with both our personal and professional lives.
I’ve had other experiences with online learning, and I can honestly say that Learn Biomimicry are doing an excellent job. From the platform where all the content is organised, to the flexibility you give us when scheduling meetings, and especially the empathy and openness you show when speaking with us — the whole experience has been great.
Having access to a direct chat with the other participants is also very valuable. It allows us to discuss the project, share ideas, and get another person’s perspective, which can be extremely useful throughout the process.
In my personal life, I want to become more observant of the things around me that I often take for granted. I want to keep a biomimicry lens and, whenever possible, ask myself how nature might solve a certain problem.
In my professional life, I would like to develop something that can inspire the people around me. It would not necessarily have to be a packaging solution, but something that encourages others to look at nature as a source of inspiration.

Over the past eight months, the Biomimicry Practitioner Programme has changed the way I think, observe, and approach engineering problems. Earlier, I would usually start by looking for existing technologies or engineering solutions. Now, I first try to understand the function and ask, "How does nature solve a similar problem?"
The Biomimicry Practitioner Programme changed the way I see the world. I started noticing biological strategies in everyday things - how plants attach and move, how webs organize structures, how organisms manage friction, flexibility, strength, and limited resources. Nature became not just something to observe, but a source of design strategies and inspiration.
The Scoping → Discovering → Abstracting → Creating → Evaluating process gave me a structured approach to innovation. For my wire-entanglement problem, I explored examples such as lotus leaf, plant tendrils, octopus arm, and bird feather, and translated their strategies into engineering principles such as helical organization, guided routing, controlled coiling, segmentation, and hierarchical organization.
The Learn Biomimicry team supported this journey through guidance, discussions, feedback, and examples. Their approach encouraged me to question assumptions, explore different possibilities, and focus on the underlying biological strategy rather than simply copying nature's appearance. I integrated biomimicry directly into my project as part of the problem-solving process rather than treating it as an additional source of inspiration.
The programme complemented my engineering and innovation work and gradually became a new way of thinking. The biggest takeaway for me is that innovation does not always mean inventing something completely new. Sometimes it means learning from strategies that nature has already refined over millions of years - and translating those lessons into meaningful engineering solutions.

As someone starting her design/build career, the Biomimicry Practitioner Programme was very informative and enlightening of the possibilities of biomimicry across disciplines.
It helped me understand the process of biomimicry design, the scope and scale of bringing ideas to life, and the need for more education and understanding of biomimicry for designers, engineers, architects, biologists, chemists, business people, and problem solvers.
I am continuing to develop my project, and am grateful to have the support and resources of the Biomimicry Practitioner Programme!

I am a circular economy and industrial sustainability researcher.
The Biomimicry Practitioner Program has helped me to better undertand how to implement biomimicry thinking in practice from project conceptualization to prototyping and evaluation.
This helps to to think out of the box and get ideas you would not otherwise get by applying traditional product design and innovation approaches.

Biodiversity Advisor at Heijmans N.V.
The Biomimicry Practitioner Programme was a profoundly life-altering experience that fundamentally rewired how I view the world.
Instead of immediately hunting for technological fixes, my first instinct is now to ask: "How would nature solve this?"
Working in a large construction company, shifting away from a rigid, tech-first mentality is a monumental task.
This course not only empowered me to showcase the brilliance of nature to my colleagues, but also gave me practical, actionable steps to actually implement it.
As the Program Manager of "Nature as a Solution," these lessons have proven absolutely invaluable.
Perhaps the most inspiring takeaway was learning that even parasites play vital, positive roles in their ecosystems. In an era where humans are often cynically likened to parasites, it’s a beautiful reminder that we, too, can learn to create a positive, grounding impact on the Earth.

As a team effectiveness facilitator and coach wanting to get my clients onto Table Mountain to grow and solve challenges together, this course has met me in the perfect place.
Incorporating biomimicry into the design of client engagements and solutions has allowed me to elevate our tried and tested methodologies. As a nature therapy guide I know that "the forest has my back", but the expanded thinking of the biomimicry process take this to a whole new level.
I am excited to launch our first nature-based series of team effectiveness experiences in 2026, thanks to this programme.

Water and Wastewater Engineer
I am a water and wastewater engineer working in the NGO sector, dedicated to protecting natural resources and promoting sustainable living.
Through biomimicry, I have learned new ways of approaching the challenges humanity face. First, by understanding the context in which these challenges occur, and then by looking to organisms and ecosystems that can guide us toward meaningful solutions.
I also use Life’s Principles as a decision-making tool to assess whether an idea truly creates conditions conducive to life, or whether it is simply another form of greenwashing. This skill is especially important today, as many businesses strive to appear “green” without delivering real systemic change.
Throughout the entire journey of becoming a Biomimicry Practitioner, the mentors were always there to guide us and offer their full support. Behind this programme is a truly wonderful team.
