I was Rachel’s manager from Feb 2016 through May 2017. I hired her after a rigorous interview process including a technical interview and writing sample review. Rachel is a _technical_ technical writer. Rachel was quick to learn the writing tools we use at Cisco. She also learned her product’s features quickly and was able to contribute content to the Identity Service Engine-Passive Identity Connector product soon after she was hired. Since then, she has put a lot of time and effort into learning the entirety of the Identity Services Engine. Rachel worked well as a member of a geographically diverse writing team. (Part of her writing team was in the United States, she is in Israel, and the rest of her writing team is in India.) She accommodated meetings at odd hours and was a good communicator with me and the other writers on her team. Rachel embraces change. In the time that Rachel has worked at Cisco, her product transitioned from a waterfall to an agile development approach. Moving to agile required everyone to learn a new development methodology and find a role within a scrum team that helped the work move forward. So, at the beginning of projects, when there was no user-facing functionality to document, Rachel took it upon herself to write the user stories for her scrum teams. She learned the engineering issues, solutions, and tasks in Hebrew and wrote the user stories in English for other teams spread around the world to read. To me this demonstrated great initiative by creating a role for herself that was helpful to her team, helpful for the project, and a good use of her skills before there was user-facing writing work for her to produce. Finally, Rachel is passionate about quality. She takes initiative to improve content wherever she sees the need.

Rachel and I worked together at Cisco. Rachel was the documentation writer for my software development team, which developed an end-to-end security solution. Rachel demonstrated exceptional teamwork, participating in all daily meetings and she explored the functionality as early as possible. She worked very closely with the other team members to make sure she had a clear understanding of the product before documenting. Rachel has very good technical skills and a great understanding of the customers’ needs, enabling her to focus on the central topics. She is very efficient and considerate when working with the team members, particularly when the team is under stress. Rachel self-manages, learning by experiencing with the product and working directly with the developers. Rachel’s documentation is modular and methodic - she makes sure that the customer understands the big picture and the theory behind all of the procedures but also writes very simple and methodic steps that the customer can follow easily, even for complicated procedures and products.

As the IT Global Manager at Netformx, I have had the privilege of working regularly with Rachel since she joined us at the beginning of 2014. Rachel brought vision, creativity and motivation to the documentation processes and output at Netformx. When she first began her position, the company suffered from unmet needs in the area of documentation, including lack of uniform look & feel, conformity to the company look & feel, and alignment with the company vision. In the time she has been here, she has contributed her knowledge and excitement towards aligning the company documentation, both with vastly improved off-the-shelf documentation, as well as customer-facing documentation, such as white papers and requirements documents.
