My Journey Back to Faith — From Tash to Tarsha
My journey back to faith is something I never expected to happen the way it did.
In March 2026, I was heavily depressed. I was also grieving the anniversary of my Nan’s death, which fell on 21 March. She passed away on 21 March 2015, so this time of year has always carried a lot of emotion for me.
I thought that perhaps going back to the Catholic Church to honour my Nan might help. I had grown up going to a Catholic church and attended until I was around 12 years old, when I started high school. It felt familiar, and I thought reconnecting with something from my childhood might bring me some comfort.
I started reading the Bible, but honestly, I found it confusing. I didn't really understand what I was reading, and something about it just didn't feel right.
Then, on 23 March 2026, I had to go into hospital for a routine ketamine infusion.
While I was lying in my hospital bed, my NDIS support worker sent me a phone number as a suggestion. It was the number for NLC — New Life Chapel.
I called and spoke with Kate.
I completely broke down.
I remember sitting there in my hospital bed, absolutely balling my eyes out to this woman I had never met before.
Then Kate said something that I will never forget:
“I’m coming in to see you. I’ll be there in 30 minutes.”
I agreed and gave her my room details.
And then she arrived.
Oh my Lord… what an experience.
It was the first time in a very long time that I felt the love of Jesus Christ in a way that felt completely different from anything I had experienced before.
There was something about that moment that I can't properly put into words. I felt seen. I felt heard. I felt cared for. Most importantly, I felt like I wasn't alone.
Kate gave me some Scripture to read, along with a beautiful little gift box. She also gave me a prayer that they use for people who want to invite Jesus into their hearts.
So I repeated the prayer.
And then something changed.
Suddenly, the Bible started making sense.
The words that had previously felt confusing began to feel different. I started to understand them in a way I hadn't before. It felt like something had clicked.
I was discharged from hospital that Saturday.
The following day was Sunday — church day.
But it wasn't just any Sunday.
It was Easter Sunday — Resurrection Sunday.
That morning, I went to church and publicly devoted myself to God.
I also got myself a new Bible that was easier for me to understand. I started highlighting passages, writing notes in the margins and actually spending time learning what I was reading.
Every Wednesday afterwards, I would meet with Kate. It became my weekly check-in — a chance to talk, reflect, learn and process everything that was happening.
And honestly, it felt like every week something incredible happened.
Sometimes it was something small.
Sometimes it felt absolutely huge.
I noticed changes in myself that I hadn't expected. I began taking fewer medications. I started experiencing improvements in different areas of my life. I experienced what I personally describe as pain miracles. There were relationship miracles. And, perhaps most importantly for me, I stopped feeling like I was constantly drowning.
At the time of writing this, I have been out of the Emergency Department for 173 days since my last presentation for chronic pain.
For someone who has spent so much time in hospital, that number means a lot to me.
I also discovered an app called Through the Word, which provides free Bible studies that guide you through each book and chapter of the Bible, verse by verse.
It has been fantastic.
For the first time, I feel like I'm actually learning and understanding the Bible in a comprehensive way rather than trying to figure it all out on my own.
I've also started attending NLC’s women’s Connect Groups.
The women I've met have been incredibly supportive, welcoming and encouraging. I've made so many new friends through church, and I honestly don't feel as alone as I used to.
Then came 2 August 2026.
That was the day I was officially baptised through water during one of the church services.
For me, baptism felt like so much more than simply getting into a pool of water.
It felt like a declaration.
A new beginning.
It honestly felt like the old “Tash” was gone — and “Tarsha” had come back.
Tarsha was my childhood name.
And in some strange, beautiful way, it felt like I was reconnecting with a part of myself that had been lost somewhere along the way.
These days, I journal most nights.
I listen to Christian music playlists almost every chance I get.
I read my Bible.
I take notes.
I highlight.
I ask questions.
I learn.
I pray.
And I keep discovering something new about my faith and about myself.
I'm still learning. I'm still figuring things out. I certainly don't have all the answers.
But I don't think I'm supposed to.
I'm just taking it one day at a time.
What has surprised me most about this journey is how different I feel inside.
For a long time, I struggled with feeling like I wasn't enough.
Like I wasn't worthy.
Like I didn't have much to offer.
Now, I am beginning to see myself differently.
I feel enough.
I feel worthy.
I feel worthwhile.
And I feel loved.
Most importantly, I don't feel so alone anymore.
I don't know exactly where this journey is going to take me, but I know that something changed in March 2026.
What started with grief, depression and a hospital bed eventually became the beginning of something I never expected.
It became the beginning of my journey back to Jesus.
And perhaps, in finding Him, I also began finding myself again.

Thank you for this simple quick guide to help me get started on understanding the Bible. Ive tried many times to read the word but got easily frustrated trying to figure out what everything meant and how to apply it to my life. Bible study groups are so free and far in between that i forget what was even discussed. Im a recovering addict and alcoholic that’s coming up on 6 months clean and sober. I started using this app when i got out of a 30 day treatment center and it has changed the way i receive the word in a huge way. I’m doing the 19 journeys and i love that i can read and listen and be guided at my own pace. I tell friends and family and coworkers about this app all the time. I truly believe being able to understand the word has helped me stay sober as this is the longest I’ve ever been since i was in my early 20’s. I’m 43 now. lol so thank you for getting me steed and keeping me interested, i love the sense of humor and the seriousness.

My morning Bible reading had absolutely hit the wall. I wasn't reading at all because it just seemed so dry. With this app, my reading has resumed mainly because of the explanations of the scriptures. I now look forward to my morning Bible readings again and it has solidified my walk with the Lord.

Hello, TTW family!
My pastor encouraged us in church on Sunday to read the stories in the Bible for ourselves. He was talking about Joshua, and even though I'm reading the Psalms on TTW, I decided to read Joshua as well. Having a guide through these stories of the Old Testament is SO valuable! Sometimes it's just an interesting "tidbit" but this morning I heard from God! Peyton Jones was discussing some of the background and analogies in Chapter 13. Then, he talked about our own battles and said that "God is not finished with you yet. I asked, "Is that true, God?"
That still small voice answered, "I am not finished with you yet".
I am renewed, refreshed and encouraged!
I wanted to share this story with you because your work is valuable. At 67 years old, I know that God still has a plan for me, and I am encouraged to keep going.

This is my first time finishing a plan in TTW, and I’ve never felt more alive in my faith. I’ve been going to church ever since I was a baby, but never have felt this good in my faith as I do now. I really understand the “made new” aspect that I always hear in the bible and in church. I always thought I was made new and a new creation, but now I look back and realize I’ve never taken it as seriously as I should have. I feel like im on a new chapter in my life and in my faith/ journey with God, and i cannot wait to see where that takes me. I would love to have a corresponding text sheet in the study that has the questions for each day and lists out resources or things we can look up to do our own research.
Same thing for the marriage courses, which was an EXCELLENT study. I have recommended it several times with others.
My family (husband, and 2 young adult children) started reading the Bible together at the start of 2025. The plan I picked was a great plan through YouVersion, but completed the entire plan in a year. My son dropped out after 3 months because he couldn't keep up with his work schedule. The others said the fast pace didn't allow them to really comprehend what they were reading.
This year, we (minus my son) started Through the Word's Journeys plan and they love the pace and the detailed learning. Thank you, so much!

I accepted Christ as my savior in January 1971 and in the intervening years I've read through the Bible approx. 15 times using 5 or 6 different translations. Every so often I'd come across passages that didn't make sense or were just very difficult to understand, especially in application to my life, so I would file it under "Waiting for more information." A couple of months ago I came upon Genesis Explained in the YouVersion Bible app and some of those passages are now starting to gain traction. I found reading through the Bible in a year using The Bible Recap study, along with the daily podcast, was a wonderful experience for me, but reading the Bible one chapter a day with TTW, and having it explained by Kris Langham, is a great benefit to this aging mind of mine. 55 years is a long time to be walking with the Lord, reading His word, and still "waiting for more information." Thank you, Kris and the whole TTW team. At a chapter a day it's going to take me ~3.25 years to go through the entire Bible, but it's going to be worth it, I think.

You have show me the depth of Jesus Love. I am a veteran that is disabled shot in the back while I was being robbed.that didn’t stop me made me stronger in God’s word Thxs to you. Also diagnosed with breast cancer went thru chemo and radiation and had a mastectomy of one breast.?I’m still here don’t know why God has save me. Maybe I have work to do that I’m still useful but I fell out my wheelchair and broke my femur.,I’m in constant pain but I know now how much he loves me. All of this starting happening in 2009 - 2026. But ur plans have really open my eyes keep it up.

The study on temptation has opened my eyes to look my walk with God differently. I always thought that facing temptation meant I wasn't close to God and I had already failed to uphold his command but I now know that temptation is expected and not only does overcoming it makes us grow but stores a reward for us in heaven .Now I move different when it comes to temptation..knowing it's a battle between my flesh and my spirit, I depend on God and try my best to walk in the spirit and feed my spirit with the word of God ...and with complete surrender to God I will overcome every temptation of the evil one ...and even if I fail ..there is grace for me ...I just have to keep running back to Jesus everytime and he will save me everytime and make me stronger to face me next temptation!! God bless you and let's not give up in doing good and letting God transform our lives! God is infact the starter and finisher of our faith !!

A close friend of mine and I read through the Bible several years ago. TTW has helped me expand my knowledge of the Bible and bring me much closer to Jesus our Savior. The study of Psalms has been a real eye opener and my heart swells listening to it. I had no idea there was so much wisdom in this book. In the past I have glossed over Psalms and picked out verses that I liked but there is so much more to get out of Psalms than just verse selection. Thank you for creating this Psalm study. It has made me view this book of the Bible in a much more positive way and understanding.

I really enjoyed this overview of scripture. Although I've been saved a while, I learned so much and was able to see the whole story more clearly. This is helpful for people in every stage of their walk with Christ.

I just finished the Old Testament with Through The Word. IT HAS BEEN AMAZING. I have learned so much through the commentaries and know I have so much more to learn and review, so much to remember. As soon as I finish the New Testament I will start over and take deeper notes. I will do this repeatedly!

TTW has been a great resource not only for reading the Bible but also for having it explained by teachers who make it interesting and fun. I started it on my own initially but invited my husband to join one of the plans. He is now using the app daily too. It keeps us motivated and engaged to choose plans together or pursue reading on our own. We love having the option to do both!
