It’s cold, wet, and rainy. Work feels slow. The creative juices aren’t flowing. So I jump into 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner’s Very Good Copy.
“Finally!” I thought. “I’ve been meaning to read this for ages.”
Hours flew by, but not a moment felt wasted. If anything, I was *more* productive reading the book than if I’d been manically writing thousands of words of copy.
For so long, I tried to put myself into the shoes of our ideal customer — trying to connect the dots between our solution and their pain.
Hell, I thought I’d nailed the recent website copy rewrite. I was sure the headlines would pop, and prospects would love reading all the new content.
But then I realised just how wrong I was. The copy isn’t bad… it’s just not great.
One lesson in the book was about windows. The late, great Eugene Schwartz would despair when people told him how great his headlines were.
Because they were seeing the words, not through them.
Good copy makes people see through the words to the product itself.
That’s when it hit me: the copy I’d been happily sitting on reads great in almost every other situation *except* the one it was written for.
Normally, I’d hit this realisation and curse myself for wasting my time.
But this time, it’s clear that this was exactly the revelation I needed.
I’ve spent the last hour rethinking all the copy I’ve drafted — zooming in on specific moments to connect with our audience in a more meaningful way.
It’s energising to see your work in a completely fresh light… which brings me to the whole point of this post:
Don’t force creativity. Take a step back. Let your ideas breathe.
Channel your customer’s demand.
Great marketing doesn’t come from forcing yourself to be creative on the spot.
It comes from everywhere — even a cold, rainy Wednesday afternoon spent reading a book.

He uses short stories to get the point across
Tidbits from his personal life
Moments most of us would discard as inconsequential
We're led to believe we need crazy stories to be "interesting"
We're led to believe our boring lives aren't "good enough"
But most of us are not Kardashians
Most of us lead ordinary lives
In "246 words on free ideas"
He recounts a dialogue between him, his wife and 2 of their friends
Brandon never talks to Uber drivers.
Eddie loves talking to Uber drivers.
Something most of us would never consider writing about.
But Eddie always finds a way to make a "boring" story...
Interesting.
Those everyday moments make him relatable.
Eddie also uses references from popular media
The show "Mad Men" in particular
He finds snippets he could relate back to the point he tries to make
And he makes them interesting
(I even started watching the show as a result)

As a screenwriter myself, I really appreciated that.
When copywriting, it's easy to get complacent and not try to peel back the layers on what you really want to say.
But reading this every day before work really made me think differently in my writing approach.

Any time there's a major shift in my role, responsibilities, company, personal life, etc., I refresh my pile. But it's almost always got at least one book from each of these groups:

When I picked up Very Good Copy by 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner I didn’t have high expectations.
Most business books, sales books, marketing books, leadership books… are fluff.
High level frameworks, regurgitated truisms.
Yes, I get that culture matters. Yes, I get you need to be customer centric. Yes, I get I need to actively listen.
I closed the book after the first few chapters.
They felt disjointed, almost random. A story about staring at art and his grandma and I don’t remember what else.
I wanted specific B2B tips I could go execute tomorrow!
But for some reason, maybe idle curiosity, I picked it up again while my newborn sat plunked on my chest.
Some interesting chapters had me take a few notes.
And suddenly I found myself getting pulled back into it, odd for a book with no central characters or plot (save for Eddie himself).
But there was something about the simplicity and the storytelling.
I read a page and I would pause and think “that flowed” or “that made me smile”, that drew me back.
What was it about that chapter that “worked”?
I’ve now been through the book fully twice and have earmarked a handful of pages, things around dialogue and headlines and “copy working” to return to.
I am realizing that great writing has to have a soul to it. It can’t just be dry, bland facts pouring out.
Even more so in an age of AI.
Although I have close to 7,000,000 views on LinkedIn this year, I realize that my writing itself is a major thing that holds me back.
Too dense. Too many words. Flat hooks.
Hell this post is a stream of conscious and likely could be half the length.
If I improved that, maybe I could hit 10m. Maybe 20m.
This book by Eddie is a compelling guide, in that it “shows” rather than tells. It shows great dialogue. It shows great hooks. It shows emotional pieces.
I always like to recommend things that are helpful to marketers or B2B growth folks.
This book is brilliant. Buy it. Read it. Then read it again and action it.

VERY GOOD COPY - written by a legendary copywriter, 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner ..
Who I believe to be the best storytelling copywriter I've seen.
He just released the book at the time and I bet I was the first copywriter to have a copy of it delivered right to my doorstep... here in Nigeria.
Well...
You know that feeling when you love a book so much you don't want to open it? Hehehe 😄.
I just kept gazing at the book for months...
And I'm wondering how a young copywriter like me in a third-world country has his hands on one of the best copywriting books ever.
If anyone ever told me I would have books ordered and delivered to me... right from Amazon...
I probably wouldn't have believed it... seeing I came from a very humble background... where we once ate pawpaw for days...
And slept in our home-church's kiosk for months because we were evicted out of a rented apartment.
But here I am...
Learning from some of the best guys in the game and gradually becoming one of them myself.
It only gets better 🤲.
And I'm happy I choose this path.

I can't wait to start turning the pages of this one. I heard about it on an HBR podcast a few days ago, and the concept is super intriguing to me. It's all about thinking outside the box to find untapped opportunities — breaking away from the competition and creating new markets. Who knows what ideas it will spark?

Luna came and curled up next to me on the sofa
Turning the page I hit the chapter on 'Emotional Writing'
A chapter where Paul Harvey's '10 Commandments for a Responsible Pet Owner' are cited as a great example
I reproduce them here:
1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
4. Don’t be angry with me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainments. But I have only you.
5. Talk to me. Even if I don’t understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, and yet I choose not to bite you.

he distills the world of copywriting into 207 of his “micro-lessons”, where he splits his book into two halves: (1) mindset: how to think like a copywriter, and (2) execute: how to write.
i placed an order for his book when he announced it and finished it in no time — and now i’ve added it on my list to re-read every year.
one immediate learning? the book has given me the confidence and license to write in a more “relaxed” fashion by using contractions, abbreviations, and colloquialisms (page 346).

It's the kind of book you read cover to cover, then want to start again because you missed bits.
It's the kind of book you'll keep on your desk and dip into whenever you need inspiration.

One of my sure-fire cures for a creative rut lately has been to read a few sections of 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner's book and the method hasn't failed me yet.
This one hit me last night: There is a time and place for expertise, now more than ever with the rise of AI, but there's also value in being known for asking interesting questions. Connecting dots. Offering a creative POV on the topic, even if you don't have a clear answer to the most SEO-able question.
I know I need to get better at getting out of my own way, and maybe this is helpful for you, too!

Recently, while reading VeryGoodCopy by Eddie Schleyner there was a 424-word feature on a word that stopped me in my tracks: sonder. It was one of those words that felt like it unlocks a part of you that’s been there all along but you hadn’t yet found the key. Sonder means realizing that every person around you has a life as vivid and complex as your own—full of hopes, dreams, struggles, and triumphs.
I sat with that word for a long time, letting it soak in. How often do we move through the world, so focused on our own story that we forget others are just as intricately woven into theirs? Later that evening, during dinner with my parents, I asked my dad if he had ever heard the word sonder.
Now let me tell you something about my dad—he’s incredibly sharp. The kind of smart where you never, and I mean never, want to face him in a game of Trivial Pursuit. But to my surprise, when I asked him if he knew what sonder meant, he paused, raised an eyebrow, and said, “Nope, never heard of it.”
With a smile, I pulled Eddie’s book out of my purse and read him the definition. As the words lingered in the air, my dad’s face softened, and after a moment, he shared something that made me realize just how much words have always been a part of his life.
While he was still working (he’s retired now), he and a few colleagues would pick a new word each week. They’d use that word in conversations, emails—basically in every context they could—until it became part of their vocabulary, part of them. It struck me that I hadn’t heard this story before, but it also made perfect sense.
Today is my dad’s birthday and I couldn’t help but think of how perfect a gift The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows would be for him. So I bought it and slipped in a bookmark that read, “Dad, for your birthday, I thought we could have a little fun with words. Each Monday, we’ll pick a new one from this book, and during the week, we have to text or call each other and use that word. Happy birthday. I love you.”
Sometimes, the smallest things—a word, a moment, a shared tradition—can connect us in ways we never expect. I realized that sonder isn’t just a concept to marvel at; it’s a reminder to step into other people’s worlds, especially the ones we hold dear. Because their stories are as rich and profound as our own, and sometimes, we’re lucky enough to share a chapter.

Sundays are for Learning - Beyond the Pages 🌱 🌿🌳
My very lovely, refreshing vacation read was 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner’s book 'Very Good Copy'. Its bite-sized chapters made it perfect for dipping in and out of throughout my trip, which was especially important on a trip with 11 other people and lots of activities vying for attention.
The book is packed with insightful lessons and tips (honestly, I’ve never highlighted more in my Kindle than I did with this read), but one lesson really resonated with me: great copywriters (and, in my opinion, great creatives in general) lead different lifestyles.
The creative lifestyle isn’t just about reading and regurgitating information. It’s about experiencing it. it’s about stepping outside our comfort zone, engaging with the world, and learning through real experiences. Collecting stories by seeing, by hearing, by doing, and by being open to new things. By saying “sure, let’s do it!” any chance we get.
There’s a quote in the book by direct marketer Joe Sugarman that beautifully captures how becoming a copywriter is a lifestyle. “It’s a hunger for knowledge, a curiosity and desire to participate in life that is broad-based and passionate.”
That has been the core of my Learning Sundays - to be open to gaining more knowledge, to be willing to learn and grow in different ways — yes, sometimes within “the books” — but mostly just experiencing things and growing in my values and understanding. My very lovely, refreshing vacation read was 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner’s book 'Very Good Copy'. Its bite-sized chapters made it perfect for dipping in and out of throughout my trip, which was especially important on a trip with 11 other people and lots of activities vying for attention.
The book is packed with insightful lessons and tips (honestly, I’ve never highlighted more in my Kindle than I did with this read), but one lesson really resonated with me: great copywriters (and, in my opinion, great creatives in general) lead different lifestyles.
The creative lifestyle isn’t just about reading and regurgitating information. It’s about experiencing it. it’s about stepping outside our comfort zone, engaging with the world, and learning through real experiences. Collecting stories by seeing, by hearing, by doing, and by being open to new things. By saying “sure, let’s do it!” any chance we get.
There’s a quote in the book by direct marketer Joe Sugarman that beautifully captures how becoming a copywriter is a lifestyle. “It’s a hunger for knowledge, a curiosity and desire to participate in life that is broad-based and passionate.”
That has been the core of my Learning Sundays - to be open to gaining more knowledge, to be willing to learn and grow in different ways — yes, sometimes within “the books” — but mostly just experiencing things and growing in my values and understanding. It’s about continuously evolving and gaining a deeper insight into the world around me. And that learning has no end in sight.

OK, it’s not really new because I’ve been reading it for a month or two since it first came out.
🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner is a copywriter (and a good one).
He wrote this book for writers, like me who have things to say but perhaps have a tough time explaining them in.
This book will inspire you in ways you’ll have to discover for yourself…even if you’re not a writer.
I read it before bed, but I do not recommend this because I usually read for 5 minutes and then restlessly think about what he said for the next hour.
It’s addictive and provoking like that.

The best part of waking up early before the kids?
A few quiet minutes with coffee and a good book. ☕📖
This morning, I was enjoying my coffee and reading 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner's book when my 4-year-old came downstairs and pulled the Dave & Buster's card I was using as a bookmark right out of the book.
"This is an arcade card!" he exclaimed while I tried to explain that I was utilizing it as a bookmark.
Of course, now I've lost my place in the book.
For the record, use and utilize aren't actually interchangeable, though people often think they are.
👉 Use is simply employing something for its intended purpose
👉 Utilize means to use something in a way it wasn’t originally meant for.
So, I was utilizing the arcade card as a bookmark.
Two lessons here:
1️⃣ Wake up earlier
2️⃣ Teach your kids the difference between use and utilize—because we can't let the next generation misuse utilize 😆

I’m still breathing heavy from the garage-gym workout as I turn the corner.
Then I see the book in her hands.
I smile, “such a good writer, right?”
“Yeah I actually really like it," she says. "You write a lot like this too.”
And that’s when I knew.
9 years and 3 kids later, I married the right woman.
She thinks I write “a lot like” 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner which is either good or bad because I just started his book and course and I'm about to start writing A LOT more like him perhaps.
Which begs a real question for Eddie and/or other copywriters out there -- where do you draw the line when it comes to learning from other writers and accidentally copying their style?

In the 37th week of the Art Appreciation project, it feels more like a meditation practice. This experience reminds me of a 492-word piece on "Noticing" by 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner in his new book, Very Good Copy. He writes, “When you take a class with Roberts, your initial assignment is always the same […] choose a painting or sculpture in a local museum, then go and look at it for three hours straight.” It's a great read, by the way! Not 200, not 210 but the very precise 207.
And the fact it’s Micro lessons made it feel like it wouldn’t be hard work

In the middle of my night reading last night, I started speaking out loud:
I've been thinking, and it's time to start seeing someone else.
By this moment my wife is looking at me with a very odd face.
We've been together for the last ten years.

I just don't feel like we're reaching our full potential together.

You can make the best software in the world, but if we can't use it to communicate value compellingly and effectively, no one will know about it. It's basically useless.
That's how I met my new love.
I've loved writing for as long as I can remember. However, I never thought it had any relationship with my Technical job.
But it has EVERYTHING to do with it.
I realized this is one of my most significant discoveries this year.
That's why stories like this one are so important; they allow us to share journeys in a way that is accessible to everyone.
