🚀 First phase completed: Full integration of the Intelligent Generation Monitoring Center The first key stage of one of the most challenging and transformative projects I have worked on is officially concluded: the real-time integration of all the generation plants of Empresa Eléctrica Quito towards a unified, scalable and digitally supervised Smart Monitoring Center. This phase included the centralised connection and monitoring of: ⚡ Gualberto Hernández Thermal Power Plant 💧 CH Cumbayá 💧 CH Nayón 💧 CH Paschoa 💧 CH Guangopolo 🔌 (Coming soon) Hidrovictoria Power Plant 🧠 Technical Approach to the Project The system is built on a modern automation architecture that integrates: 🔹 Advanced HMI Weintek cMT-FHDX-820 — Programmed with macros, used for the calculation, treatment, consolidation and optimization of critical variables. — Interfaces designed in EasyBuilder Pro for intuitive, responsive, and operator-oriented visualization. 🔹 Data acquisition from Schneider Quantum PLC — Direct consumption of data on power, flow, levels, MWh, generation curves and mission-critical electrical parameters. — Standardization of protocols and optimization of data structures for reliable WAN performance. 🔹 WAN Communications Infrastructure and Central Broker — Each exchange sends its data in real time to a single node, with optimized telemetry and packet management. — Low latency, redundancy, security and full traceability are ensured. 🔹 WeinCloud Cloud Platform – Executive Dashboards — 24/7 remote monitoring, with just a link to the Weincloud web platform. — Advanced graphs of power, accumulated energy, fuel, efficiencies, transformer states and dynamic behavior. — Daily reports automatically generated in the cloud. 💡 Phase 1 Results ✔️ 100% operational integration of all the plants. ✔️ Real-time visualization of thermal and hydraulic energy production. ✔️ Unified dashboards that allow instant analysis of the energy balance. ✔️ Optimization of supervision for operators, maintenance and management. 🌐 Ultimate Goal Build a platform that takes energy management towards a modern scheme of: Smart Grid, centralized operation, intelligent automation and data-driven decision-making This project marks a before and after in the digitalisation of operational supervision and represents a firm step towards more resilient, efficient and sustainable energy management.

A PROJECT I’M PROUD OF A couple of years ago, I implemented an automation system for a sugar production facility — the chamber press filter station used for suspension filtration. During this project, I created a 3D model of the collector piping and actuator layout, developed the control algorithm from scratch on a VIPA 300s PLC, and fully built the interfaces for a Weintek HMI panel and a WinCC Professional SCADA system. This was my first PLC, SCADA, and HMI project that I completed entirely on my own. The most rewarding part was seeing the 3D model come to life and watching the mechanisms operate exactly as I had defined in the logic.

Activation cards are per device, so you will need 5 cards. I don't believe the licenses are transferable from device to device either. We have liked the easy access connectivity though and have used it on many applications.

For these projects, I've selected Weintek HMIs - I'm working in EasyBuilder Pro, and it seems like it'll be more than capable for my needs. Someone in this sub suggested them, and I'm liking the software more than the one for the CMore HMIs (and some other brand I've forgotten at the moment). So that part is set. 2 projects - OEM machine that controls some smaller pumps via relays and digital inputs, and monitors tank volume via a 4-20mA pressure sensor. In-house manufacturing line that will pump chemicals and use IO-Link flowmeters from IFM and likely some 4-20mA level sensors, and trigger some output relays.

Our production line wants to create an awareness dashboard with modern web technology. We want to extract data logs via Weintek, as our current system uses Siemens PLCs and HMI. The old vendor used Siemens environment tools like WinCC and TIA Portal to create a dashboard, but we can't afford to purchase a license. So we've decided to extend our topology using Weintek instead.

New panel for a chilled water system using the Weintek CMT3218XP 21.5" HMI - Great looking piece of kit. Looking forward to getting this one installed on site 😀 Graphics to follow when commissioning is underway! We'll be using this as part of an IO link system to display temperature, pressure and flow rate for 14 machines. For systems like this I always opt for IO link as it provides us quick and easy expansion to the system. The systems we design are very versatile and can be used in a range of applications, using only the best equipment we can provide solutions for any industry.

Ignition doesn't support CANbus. Probably not a deal killer for most situations. At my company my colleague wants to start using Ignition Edge for ALL of our HMI projects. Which makes sense. But I am making an HMI for diesel engines. The lack of CANbus support means I have to jump through a 3rd party OPC-UA to convert it before sending it to HMI. I think I am just going to use the a Weintek/Maple HMI for this project because it has CANbus support built in. Other than that, the only downside I can think of is that an Ignition Edge license is $1300. If that is per panel, it's going to get really expensive in a hurry. Our application needs 7 HMIs per machine.

I've used them quite a bit as Maple systems screens. I like that they can talk to a ton of different PLC types. I mainly use it for Allen-bradley cause the weintek is a lot cheaper than the panelviews. Heck, there was one project on a dredge in Savannah that used a 4" weintek just to switch screens on a factorytalk SE Application.
