Last Thursday, I attended the Financial Planners Ireland annual conference. It’s one the key events each year and a great opportunity to catch up with peers and friends, as well as hearing great speakers. The highlight for me was listening to thegirlnamed Stevyn . Stevyn is a health expert for financial advisors. Her hope is not only that we take on board her advice, but that we share her knowledge with our clients. How often do we see people plan financially for their retirement only to spend a large part of it in ill health. Good health is often the missing piece of a successful retirement plan. Stevyn talks about how we can extend our health span and reduce our sick span. Incredibly for a health expert, I don’t think she mentioned diet and exercise once! In her opinion, you must have foundation in place, before you go on diets. Her approach was refreshing, and she left us with actionable tips to improve our own health and wellness. I note some of these below. Get regular blood tests. Wear a health and fitness tracker to monitor your steps, beats per minute and your sleep patterns. Measure your waist in inches (from your belly button) and divide by your height in inches. It should be less than 0.5 Split the day in half. If you have breakfast at 7am, finish eating at 7pm giving your body 12 hours fasting period every day. The first hour in the day and last hour before bed are vital to set yourself up for success. Drink water first thing in the morning. Look at daylight within 10 minutes of waking. Try and walk after each meal, even if its just 15 minutes. When sitting for long hours, try and remember to move every hour, even if it’s just a 1-minute walkabout. Fall risk is a huge issue as we get older. The more times we get down and up off the floor during the day the better. If you can do this without your hands, you’re doing great so keep it up!! Finally set your self up for a good night’s sleep. No food within 3 hours of sleep, no work within 2 hours and vitally, no blue screens within 1 hour. I loved the portal!

This helped me prioritize my health in daily life. I never would’ve lost the weight without the food journal and the focus on “balancing my macros“.” It’s been super helpful to have someone I can talk to to cut through all the conflicting information that’s out there on nutrition and exercise, plus it helped me focus on the information that is relevant to my age and gender. I liked having access to a supportive and knowledgeable wellness coach to share the latest evidence based research re health and longevity. Also access to the tools you need to manage ur nutrition and track ur progress with data. No judgments- just support and information! I loved the portal! Balancing the macros is just like a video game for me, helps me plan my meals and stay on track.
