It helped me flesh out a character in a novel I'd drafted but knew it was missing a whole lot. Combined with another major, breakthrough idea, it's given me a direction and depth the novel has been missing.

Wow! Wow! Wow! This course was amazing. I've read John Truby's book three times and been overwhelmed each time. While I have to say my brain needs a break after watching this course over a two-day time period, I never felt overwhelmed, and this course finally made sense of a lot of the things Truby said. Mary is a master of all things character! She takes a complex and overwhelming concept and makes it easily understandable and applicable for writers. I love her delivery, enthusiasm, and puns! Very enjoyable!

Definitely helped me realize the concept of interiority which is explained wonderfully in this course. I also loved the Dynamic Character Worksheet because I've tried a lot of character profiles on the internet and none have been anywhere near as satisfyingly simple and comprehensive!

When I first began this course I was having difficulties creating lifelike characters, but now my characters are full of life and practically walk off the page.

After working with the same protagonist for literally years as I continue to revise my middle grade duology, I thought I really knew my character - nope! I realized that some things I had written were inconsistent with with how she is on the inside, and that I didn't flesh her out enough. I'm hoping that with more interiority on the page, I'll be able to figure out which scenes really serve that inner story. The way Mary broke down the different components one at a time really helped to simplify how to think about adding layers. One of the most valuable courses I have taken!

Yes, I loved the exercises and working along with the class helped me find some missing layers to characters I'd already created and wanted to make better. I plan to come back to the handouts in the future if I get stuck.

This course was fantastic. As a non-fiction writer determined to write my first novel, it gave me SO much to think about and work with. I loved the instructor (inspector? ha) jams and seeing how Mary and Jessica's approaches differed yet overlapped to result in something great. Following the lectures with pertinent exercises was a great, organized, effect approach, and I really appreciated Mary's clarity in each lecture. Excellent course - thank you!

I am facing difficulties with the plot of my story because at some point, I knew there was something wrong with my main characters. This course helped me to get some new ideas and directions - but the first part with the 7 tools was the most interesting for me. I am looking forward to getting back to the writing phase in order to use these tools! (Sorry if my English isn't perfect - that's not my native language and I am not writing in English, but the trainers are very easy to understand, that's great)

This course helped me sort out my THREE main characters, each of whom has their own ideas of what's going on with the story's Big Challenge... and they're all wrong. I've found a few spots where they react inconsistently or--even worse--start to sound or act the same!

Once again, Writing Mastery Academy provided a course I didn't know I needed... and I really needed this one badly. So many great tools on developing a character's interiority. I thought this was going to be course on filling out character profile sheets on "eye color" and "clothing style." So glad I was wrong!

One of the big things I got from this course was a clear explanation of why filler words and passive voice should be avoided. I recently got the paid version of ProWritingAid and didn't like blindly accepting the changes suggested. Jordan's course made it so much clearer as to why I should consider them. This course definitely helped me understand, in actionable steps, how to craft a realistic objective for my character, her age and situation that felt in line with the theme I'm trying to bring across. Definitely a complement to the plotting I've learned from the Save the Cat method! I feel as though I've gained more clarity and the ability to sort through the mess of ideas in my mind.

This is a fantastic class that offers something for folks who have been writing a long time, as I have, and for beginners. Lots of good tips and insights to make characters more interesting, complex and nuanced. Mary Kole is a great teacher, and I enjoyed the Instructor Jam sessions, where they shared what they discovered when they did the writing prompts.

There's a lot of useful information here, and it's presented very well, with examples and exercises for each part.

I was having trouble making my characters more memorable, likable, and nuanced. I learned lots of ways (through voice, thought, and dialogue) to help make my characters stand out and reveal them in more meaningful ways. I tend to keep my characters either inside their head or do too much telling or physical showing. This course helped me reveal my storyline and my characters in a more sophisticated, savvy way. I plan to use these techniques and exercises for my work-in-progress.

Mary Kole did an amazing job as the main instructor for this course, and the side jams with Jessica were pretty entertaining. I didn't realize how important character development was to my story and tended to focus more on plot. Now I understand that character is really the foundation of a good story, and the majority of the plot and theme almost naturally flows out of knowing and understanding my own characters. It helped me recognize why some scenes in my story flowed effortlessly and felt right while other scenes felt wrong. There were times when I would spend hours trying to figure out why a scene wasn't working. I am amazed by how much this course has helped me pinpoint problems faster. Thank you so much!
